Elephants painting... wow.

This is really fascinating. Watch as an elephant paints a picture of an elephant. (Located in Maesa Elephant Camp, Chaing Mai, Thailand.)

Lots more elephant painting videos here too.

In the YouTube comments, someone claims the elephants are just trained to paint the same picture over and over again, and that this enterprise is exploitive to elephants. This painting here is very similar. The web site of the Elephant Artist Gallery is here. Check out the Gallery, and you will find many are similar, but some are quite varied. What do you think?

Sir Arthur C Clarke, RIP

It is with sadness we learned today of the passing of Sir Arthur C. Clarke, the great science fiction writer and space visionary.

Arthur was a hero of ours, and his cartoon self found his way into many of our comics over the years. It was a great thrill of ours when a few years ago, we learned from an acquaintance of Arthur's, that he had seen our work and thought it was "well done".

Among his many legacies are Clarke's Three Laws:
1. When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong.
2. The only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible.
3. Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.

Thanks Arthur, for bringing both advanced technology and such wonderful magic into this world.

Below are Arthur's 90th birthday reflections...

BigDog robot video.. WHOA!

A great video of Boston Dynamics's BigDog quadruped robot... this thing is amazingly life-life. Watch it walk over rubble and in deep snow, recover from slipping on ice, and keep its balance when someone tries to kick it over, all while carrying 120 pounds of payload! BigDog is powered by a gasoline engine driving a hydraulic actuation system, all controlled by an on-board computer. You can find more info about it here.

GMx: rocking out on the cover of LEO!

Maddux rocks!Long time Forum member and Superfan GMx is featured in the cover story of the alternative weekly Louisville Eccentric Observer (LEO). It's a great interview, spanning Greg's humble origins growing up by a cement plant, covering his early music and influences, to his "Great Dry Spell" where he took a hiatus from music and explored graphics design. It was here he was introduced to computers, and that, along with the emergence of the iPod, re-awakened the music in him.

Greg is making up for the dry spell, and has a ton of projects going. "I have an album called Kerry that I want to put out, because it's been sitting around for about two and a half years, and I just want to get it out. Also, I have another album waiting to be released called F**k Singer that's folk- and country-oriented originals and some covers. Right now, I'm working on something called Recycler. It's harder edged and loud with a big beat."

His current release, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, is a collection of his early material and live performances. It's available at Barnes & Noble's Hurstbourne Lane, Louisville, Kentucky locations, as is his album Goin' Down To Rahway (also available in downloadable form at iTunes, Napster and Verizon.)

Check out the interview here, and the podcast here, and be sure to visit Greg online at MySpace, or just say hi to him on the Forums! And of course, he made an appearance in one of our Joy of Tech comics too!

The Joy of Tech is on AllThingsD!

All things D!

In case you haven't noticed already, The Joy of Tech comic is now featured on the highly regarded and always entertaining AllthingsD.com! That's right, you can find us prettying up the Voices section, with a new comic appearing a few times every week. (RSS feed here).

What exactly is AllThingsD? Well, it features opinion and reviews by the mighty Walt Mossberg, the sassy blogger and IT news-breaker Kara Swisher, and hilarious commentary on the tech industry by the funniest dude in Silly Valley, John Paczkowski.

The site is wholly owned by Dow Jones, publisher of The Wall Street Journal, but run autonomously as a small online start-up, so that gives them high journalistic standards to live up to, but a ton of freedom to push the boundries of New Media.

It's a great mix, and we're big fans of the site. It is an honour and a privilege to find ourselves there, and we hope you'll make it regular stop too.
