The only thing I thought about after watching that video was the "Go West" cover by the Pet Shop Boys [crazy]

I remember seeing a Leningrad Cowboys video (not sure if it was this one) on either MuchMusic or The New Music back in another century.

Pop quiz: Anyone here know the origin of the Cowboys?

It seems they have the answer in their Wikipedia article. Reportedly they we're an actual band passing as a fictional band for a movie, where they took their name.

Damn Wikipedia!

Pretty close. The article agrees with my recollection that the Leningrad Cowboys were characters in Aki Kurismaki's (I can spell that without looking it up!) 1989 film Leningrad Cowboys Go America about a completely talent-free band from the Finnish tundra who seek their fortune in the wastelands of Middle America, where people "will listen to anything." Most of the actors who played the Cowboys were members of a real Finnish band; their "long-lost American cousin" was played by Nicky Tesco of punk band The Members. I was going to say they're alot like Spinal Tap in that regard; that they've continued recording just strengthens the similarity.

I've seen the film; it drags a bit in spots, but overall it's pleasantly amusing.
