Gimme some Freedom!

If you're a Twitter addict, Internet junkie, or just can't stop checking your email, Freedom is for you.

Freedom is a Mac application that disables wireless and ethernet networking on an Apple computer for up to three hours at a time. Freedom will free you from the distractions of the internet, allowing you time to code, write, or create. At the end of your selected offline period, Freedom re-enables your network, restoring everything as normal.

Freedom enforces freedom; a reboot is the only circumvention of the Freedom time limit you specify. The hassle of rebooting means you're less likely to cheat, and you'll be more productive.

You just plug in how many minutes of freedom you'd like, then work away undistracted by network temptations. (now if only Freedom would also hide the refrigerator, unplug the phone, and cut off the cable TV.) Freedom is free, but the author Fred Stutzman notes a donation of ten dollars would be very much appreciated.

Ironically I found out about Freedom from a Tweet. I'll definitely be trying this out sometime... maybe after I check my email, and Techmeme, and reddit, and... :-D

Helix shaped wind generators are for the birds.

Just saw this interesting link over at Ecopreneurist. It's a wind turbine with a different shape brought to you by Helix Wind. Its unique shape is said to be bird friendly (I wonder if it's bat friendly too, as bat deaths by wind turbines is a significant problem.) Available in 1kw or 2kw systems... this isn't going to power your server farm, but it's a step in the right direction. I think they look very cool, and apparently are much quieter than other kinds of wind generations. I want one!
