The Geekiest Hobby - Radar Notes, by RonDesVous

Collecting tends to be a geeky thing. Jocks never seem to be collectors. No one snaps a towel and announces that they received their 1902 MS 66 dime in the mail from a recent e-bay win and are gleeful about it. Nor do they describe the blow by blow sniping action of how they got the winning bid in (their loss).
My favourite area is coin collecting. It has much to offer the geek. You must be skilled at the bookish arts. There are books coin mintages, coin varieties (you know when the mint screws up and makes a mistake on a coin) and coin grading. The hobby has its own lingo. It also passes the acid test of geeky hobbies: at a coin convention the ratio of men to women is 100 to 3. In fact the only women there are the ones looking to use the phone, or are dutiful wives and girlfriends dragged there against their will (or as part of a complex tit-for-tat involving attendance at some fashion show, movie marathon of the "chick" variety).
One upside is that you can do it for fun and profit!!$!! Take one of my favorite areas within coin collecting is collecting radar notes for example. A radar note is a note that is the same read frontwards or backwards like this: 1234321 just like the word "radar". In Canada one note in 1000 is a radar because Canadian banknotes have 7 digits. In the case of US banknotes one note in 10,000 is a radar note because US notes have 8 digits.
The profit potential is huge. When I started looking for radar notes I found one in the first two weeks. It was a juicy two digit radar. This means it was comprised of only two different numbers: 7222227 (in this case 7s and 2s). I got it from a bank machine and it was well used/circulated. I put it on e-bay and it sold for $30. If it were uncirculated or lightly used it may have sold for $50-$80.
It is easy to get hooked after a nice score like that. I have built my collection up nicely over the last 5 years. In that time my older notes have trippled in value.
So while you jocks talk about sports, the big game etc some geek will be making money checking his change. Also a word of caution to the jocks out there: while you are absorbed with watching sports on TV or in the bar with the other jocks ... guess who is chatting up your girlfriends BWAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAH!!!!!

Is Communism Really Dead? by Ron DesVous
A buddy of mine and I were discussing how things look bleak for global communism: billionaires in Russia, stock exchanges in China and the two of us left wingers getting banking jobs in '90's. Was Karl Marx wrong? Or does Russia's and China's move to capitalism prove that he was right? After all he did say that communism would never start in Russia because it was so under-industrialised.
Maybe it's timing. Capitalism (where society's goods are distributed according to your ownership of capital) is only 250 years old; whereas, feudalism (the distribution of goods according to your relationship to the King) lasted 1400 years. We could have another thousand years of capitalism!
The big question is whether there is still an inherent contradiction in capitalism. Do the people who own the factories and businesses want to reduce labour costs by replacing labour with machines or cheaper labour? If so, will they eventually reduce labour to the point where there are not enough people with jobs to sustain the mass market and the system? '
Marx says 'yes': enter socialism. He said that someday people would take over the means of producing goods ' the machines, factories and call centers--rather than have them sit idle while everyone is starving and out of work. Once the means of producing things are owned in common, the goods will be divided according to each person's work. We will all have government jobs! Marx thought that eventually things will be divided according to each person's need. Most people find this hard to believe. Communists say that this is because people have been corrupted by a system that rewards greed and self interest. Arguably as we move into a system based on co-operation our inherent good nature will come out. Slackers and greedy bosses are a function of capitalism.
How does Marx's theory match with current events? Manufacturing moved from Europe and North America to Japan, then to South East Asia, and now to China and India. North America and Europe moved to the service industry. Now call centers and customer service divisions are opening up in India where they can speak English (sort of). Eventually the quest for cheap labour could industrialize every global region. Once every global region has been industrialised machines and automation could grind down labour costs. Could it get to the point where there will not be enough people with jobs to sustain the mass market and the system as a whole?
My buddy and I figured that we will hang in with our capitalist clients and switch to socialism in the last minute. The switch from private ownership to state ownership at the hands of starving masses could get ugly. You want to be on the winning side when it happens. Until then we will keep our banking jobs. In this way whether Marx is currently right, right one thousand years from now, or not right at all... we will be covered. Until then: yeah capitalism !!!!
