Is it really a phobia if you have a good reason for being scared of them?

(probably NSFW, definitely gross, dismembered arm in an alligator's mouth, don't click if your squeamish etc. etc. is that enough warning yet?)

Holy crap!

Worst. Celibate. Ever.

A phobia (from the Greek φόβος "Phobos" meaning Fear), is an irrational, intense, persistent fear of certain situations, objects, activities, or persons.
from wiki . I'm guessing due to that definition it wouldn't be a phobia, but I'm pretty sure I'm not going to go shove my arm anywhere near an alligator's mouth.

Things, and things.

I have to agree with SpazGirl. If an alligator or crocodile were coming at me I think it would be quite rational to be afraid. With that said, most alligators will leave humans alone so long as you leave them alone. It's the ones that have been put on display or where humans have encroached too far into their territory that you have to worry about because they are used to us being around and they think we are not a threat. I still wouldn't get too close to one that is not used to humans because it will attack out of fear. IOW stay away from them unless you are trained to deal with them and even then they are still dangerous.

Well, we must admit there's a thin line between fear a panic. It's normal to be afraid of the crocodile because he's actually dangerous, but phobias are socially awkward behaviours that involve even the non-presence of the phobia cause, like panicking at Steen's photo more than it could be considered "normal".

I've seen how high those scaly fsckers can jump.
Be afraid, be very afraid.

btw - true story:
Zambia, 1995, Mrs Druid and I go on a croc watching drive along the river, and see a section of river bank several hundred metres long that's almost 100% covered in crocs.

An hour later, we're putting up our tent near a village 4 or 5 km away on the same river, and watching locals up to their waists in water dragging their fishing boats out of the river.

/me asks a local "Aren't you afraid of the crocodiles?"

local: "Oh no, we have this magic that keeps the crocodiles away."

/me: "And that works????"

local: "Usually."

If you watch 'The History Of NASA' backwards, it's about a space agency that has no manned spaceflight capability, then does low-orbit flights, then lands on the Moon.
