When We Left Earth, the DVD series.
We are huge fans of NASA here at Geek Culture, in fact they were the inspiration behind Geek Culture's creation! So when we had a chance to review When We Left Earth, a new DVD series on the NASA missions, we blasted off at the chance.
There's a wealth of great stuff here, as the series tells the story of the US space program, from Gemini to Space Shuttle. The behind-the-scenes footage is incredible and the interviews with astronauts, engineers, and flight controllers are superb. It features tons of footage I've never seen before, and that is a real thrill for a space geek like me. Especially exciting to see is the first-man-on-the-moon, Neil Armstrong, who has shunned the spotlight and is rarely does interviews, talking about his experience.
Neat tidbit... the average age of the flight controllers was 26, and one of the oldest guys was 36!
My only complaint is that the series focuses only on the USA space program. I would *love* to see a similar series about the USSR's program.
Here's the official blurb...
Since the dawn of mankind we have stared up at the stars and wondered about the unknown. Now, join the heroic men and women who have dared to do the impossible on some of the greatest adventures ever undertaken... the quest to reach out beyond Earth and into the great mystery of space. To celebrate 50 years of amazing achievements, the Discovery Channel and NASA partnered together to reveal the heroic struggles, triumphs and tragedies in a bold chapter of human history. Priceless footage was transferred from NASA's own secret film vaults, finally making these unprecedented treasures available for the masses. Along with candid interviews of the people who made it all happen, hundreds of hours of never-before-seen film footage from the NASA archives, including sequences on board the actual spacecraft in flight, have been carefully restored, edited and compiled for this one-of-a-kind, truly epic collection.
When We Left Earth: The NASA Missions available everywhere on DVD and Blu-ray High-Def. Check it out on Amazon here... When We Left Earth.

I'll be frank, I love my Plank.
I just love my iPhone and all the apps and games that are available for it. One of my favorite new games is Plank, (iTune link) from our friends over at Strange Flavour (who created such classics as Airburst and Bushfire) and Freeverse. Plank is similar to their ToySight games, only it's been shrunk down for iPhone, steampunked up, and utilizes the iPhone's accelerometer as a control.
It's a simple game... balance the marbles on the plank by tilting the iPhone left and right, and roll them to match falling marbles of the same color. Match up three or more to score points and remove the marbles. Your goal is to clear the marbles quickly or the weight will be too much for the steam-powered plank, and it will do as overloaded steam-powered planks do... explode!
I like Plank because it starts out rather relaxing, as marbles drift down from the sky in front of serene backgrounds. But of course you know this won't last forever, and Plank gets more and more challenging as new marbles drop down to wreak steam-powered plank havoc. The graphics are just gorgeous, the gameplay is really fun, audio is superb, and there's some neat easter eggs too! It's a perfect example of a perfect iPhone game... visually stunning and fun, perfect for a quick play while in a line-up, or a longer session while traveling, watching TV, or just geeking out.
Plank has three difficulty levels, from Normal to the aply named Nnnnaaaarghh! It's only $1.99, so you won't blow all your marbles on it, and I think you'll love it. (Unless you are the guy who has to repair those overloaded steam-powered planks. :D )
Read more for another screen shot, and a video of the gameplay!
And be sure to check out the developers Plank tips and tricks!
Here's a video!

The fracking NDA is dropped!

Great news for iPhone developers, Apple has dropped the NDA for released iPhone software!
You can read the full text after the jump, or check out the official Apple Announcement here.
Of course, this had nothing to do with our recent NDA comic, now did it? :P
To Our Developers:
We have decided to drop the non-disclosure agreement (NDA) for released iPhone software.
We put the NDA in place because the iPhone OS includes many Apple inventions and innovations that we would like to protect, so that others don’t steal our work. It has happened before. While we have filed for hundreds of patents on iPhone technology, the NDA added yet another level of protection. We put it in place as one more way to help protect the iPhone from being ripped off by others.
However, the NDA has created too much of a burden on developers, authors and others interested in helping further the iPhone’s success, so we are dropping it for released software. Developers will receive a new agreement without an NDA covering released software within a week or so. Please note that unreleased software and features will remain under NDA until they are released.
Thanks to everyone who provided us constructive feedback on this matter.
Congrats to the developers, and to Apple on this one. :D
