ok, now it is My turn for a little brain teaser. Does anyone know why it is on the clock face with roman numerals the number 4 is shown as "IIII" and not "IV" yet the number nine is correctly shown as "IX" and not "VIIII". I betcha don't know do ya?..........Z

Visual balance. The 4 on the right comes opposite the 8 on the left, and having IV and VIII would make the dial look visually lop-sided. Thus, IIII was chosen to balance it out.

I've seen it bothways, but I never thought about it. The balance point does sound possible, but if that was all it were. I must admit, I don't know. Hey, if a sundial is the clock with the least amount of moving parts, what is the clock with the most amount of moving parts?

What is your quest?

What is with my monty python refernces in those last few questions?

Once there was an empror who fell asleep under a tree. He dreamed he was a butterfly who landed on the nose of an emperor asleep under a tree, and fell asleep. He dreamed he was an empror who woke up with a butterfly on his nose. Which is really, a butter fly dreaming he's a emperor or an emperor dreaming he'sa butterfly?

What is the fasination of script kiddies with the ascii charictors in there online names? Do they thing that no one knows how to hold down the meta (alt) key and type a few digits at the same time? (this from me, GameMaster... But at least the has a meaning behind it.)

Why didn't anyone tell me before that UBB accepts the weirder ASCII chars? I could have had my proper name. Oh well.

I am fairly certian that most of the food served at McDonald's isn't Irish. Why don't they have more fast-traditional-Irish-food? Like a MacCabbage or a Patato McPancake? Wow, this is quite the thread.. just read it over the span of a couple days (it's slow at work, all the big shots are away).

Zorro, a couple suggestions for things to do: traveling, and astronomy (you can combine them too!).

GM: I'd say the clock with the most moving parts is the solar system.

Questions for Zorro:

Shaken or stirred?

What's your favourite kind of Timbit, eh?

Has anyone ever taken the last chocolate Timbit from you, like Rob just did to me?

What it does is it shuts itself off. I goes to a standby light.

That sounds like a hardware problem to me. My first suspicion would be the power supply; either the power supply is failing, or you're overtaxing it with too much demand (or both). Take it to a local computer dealer/repair shop and tell them the symptoms. When they tell you it sounds like you have a bad power supply, nod and say "Yeah, thought so," and ask them how much it will be to replace it.

A: shaken whenever possible.

What's your favourite kind of Timbit, eh?

A: double chocolate with chocolate sprinkles and chocolate pudding filling.

Has anyone ever taken the last chocolate Timbit from you, like Rob just did to me?

A; nope, most people know well enough not to get between Me and food.

A: depends on the grandness of your scale and what you consider a clock. The universe itself could be considered a clock and has been used as such.

A: there are anti-teen magazines, but the PC views of this country have sent them all to the shredder.

More Questions (and major troll at end)

Why do so many computer terms sound dirty? (Big Oh time, finger, hard drive, floppy, down load, ect., ect., ect.)

A: becase geeks spend so much time with computers that we notice those terms as sexual. If you ever asked a car mechanic I am sure you'd find the same thing there. (dipstick, rear end, headlights, blower, hauling ass, you get the point)

What is the air speed volicity of a swallow?

A: an african or european swallow?

What is your favorite color?

A; black

What is your quest?

A: to infect the world with My sexual attitude **bet you were hoping it were something like "to find the grail"**

What is with my monty python refernces in those last few questions?

A; most geeks like Monty Python, it is a proven fact.

A: the emperor, butterflies don't sleep

Is the Gorge Bush near the Goverment tree with all the twisted branchs or it the other one with the Quail in it?

A: the george bush is around the base of the presidential wood.

What is the fasination of script kiddies with the ascii charictors in there online names? Do they thing that no one knows how to hold down the meta (alt) key and type a few digits at the same time? (this from me, GameMaster... But at least the has a meaning behind it.)

A: they think it looks cool, and it helps adults recognize immature players >;o)

Why didn't anyone tell me before that UBB accepts the weirder ASCII chars? I could have had my proper name. Oh well.

A: we are not supposed to tell you, geeks have to figure somethings out on their own

Why do all the "question words" begin with 'w' except "how"? Is there a special name for those "question words?

A: what about "did". did it ever occur to you that "who what when where why and how" are only the basic question words. is something never happened then all of those other question words would not apply.

Why did Pepsi split Tricom off? Pizza Hut was better pizza before Tri-Com, dammit.

A: someone made a lot of money and got to say that "they did it"

And what is with McDonald's "Mac/Mc" everything? I am fairly certian that most of the food served at McDonald's isn't Irish. Why don't they have more fast-traditional-Irish-food? Like a MacCabbage or a Patato McPancake?

A: they think it actually sells better that way. after I found out that their meat was not totally meat, I quit eating there. Go to Burger King, Jack In th Box, or Wendy's, it is much better tasting there.

Where can I get a good Patato Pancake in Milwaukee, outside of Myer Festival Park?

A: wait for My mom to show up, or try here, I hear theirs are good http://www.foodspot.com/bavarianwurst/index.html it is part of their famous friday fish fry. Not sure if you can get it by itself.

Are there any geeks (from this board) that are among the millions who flock to Summer Fest each year? And what bands do you look for?

A; I am sure there are, but I have never been to Milwaukee Myself so I don't know who is playing. I like a variiety of music so I am sure I would find something.

Remember car trips when you were little?

A: We went to bedrock city in Kelowna many years ago, I miss the old rear facing seats in the old style station wagons.

Can I go home now?

A: yes

Are we there yet?

A: no, when I was little we never got there and we were thankful!

I have to go potty, can you pull the car over?

A: just hang your butt out the window and go

Mom, can you tell Jeff to stop hitting me?

A: be a man and hit him back, if I have to pull the car over ione more time I am leaving you both on the side of the road

Where are going anyway?

A: to hell if we don't change our ways

Can we stop at that cute truck station with all the neat harley stuff that I'll beg you to buy, and then whine about how I broke it after you finally cave in, just to get me to shutup in the store?

A; yes, I might even be able to sell you into slavery there.

Will all the geeks with kids now kill me for reminding them of how horrible it is when they go somewhere?

A; maybe, it depends on the geek.

How many geeks with kids post to these boards, just currious?

A: I have no kids that I am aware of

Should I digress now?

A: no just yet

How about now?

A; hold on a little more

Now?

A; I said wait dammit

Oh, I'll wait....
Now?

A; fine, go right ahead "you little bastard"<----- one of My dad's favorite things to yell at Me

O.k. I digress.

A: please phrase your posts in the form of a question >;o) ........Z

Non-geek girls lack intelligence, Zorro? Now you've done it-you've pissed me off. I consider myself very intelligent, but I just started getting into the computer recently. (I'm basically still a virgin ) I don't know what a hobbit is, I've only seen the Star Wars movies once-and **gasp** usually months after they come out, I hate sci-fi and fantasy in general, I still can't find most of my files after I've saved them, and I'm tech support's worst nightmare("gee, that never happens when anyone else is using that program"). I've sent grown tech guys running to their mommies.Oh, wait..that was something else..never mind. I'm sure you didn't mean to offend anyone(this time), Z....

Well, I consulted with my dad (old clocks are a hobby of his) and he said that there are two opposing views: a) that it was done for symmetry, or b) the famous clock maker Thomas Thompion didn't fully understand Roman numerals and got it wrong [and was copied, presumably]. The latter is doubted because apparently back then, everyone knew Roman numerals.

You can take your pick, like everyone else :-)

actually that was more of My live bait. I was hoping to get a nibble, didn't expect it to work so soon. I actually don't care how intelligent someone is, they don't have to be smart to be good company. I dated one girl who was so much an airhead that I got windburn from sitting too close. She wasn't very bright, but she sure knew how to have a good time. I still miss her dearly, she always knew how to make Me feel needed..........Z

I look at My clock almost every day it it really doesn't seem that the symetry thing is correct. It would look just as good wither way to Me. I think it is an answer that was given by someone who didn't know or even wanted to try and find out so now it has become the accepted answer. I am on a mission to find out the truth. I know it is a silly mission, but it really bugs Me and it helps to pass time >;o) ..........Z

Zorro, nice subtle typing touch answering Nayt's hair color post. So my question(s) is(are), Why does Nayt want to dye his hair pink or purple? Is this a joke on his part, trying to confuse us, or sincere? Is Nayt Nayt, or is Nayt Brian?
Now that I'm starting to get deep, are we the agents in the Matrix, inhabitants of the Matrix, the Matrix doesn't exist, or am I Neo, surfing the web from the [hard to spell (and/or remember) ship ( starting with an N, Nebudchadezzar - no clue)], with all the other geeks here being on similar ships?
Okay that question was a little out there, but you never know.
Back to practical questions:
How can I start a conversation with an attractive woman, who I know almost nothing about, and turn it into a relationship, and/or asking her out to a movie, keeping in mind that I am a somewhat shy geek?
How do I avoid finding myself in a LJBF scenario, while theoretically fulfilling the "becoming friendly with person" phase before asking said person out? Or, is that required, and if not, how do I burst into a relationship [without guns blazing, of course]? Does the "I'm not usually this forward, but would you have lunch with me (or go to a movie with me?)" thing have a chance of working - because I am very rarely forward.

P.S. Good show taking this to 5 pages ... perhaps this will become a bona fide institution to the Forums.

[QUOTE]Originally posted by dragonman97:

** thanks, I was trying to be sincere with My answer even though I doubt the question was serious.

So my question(s) is(are), Why does Nayt want to dye his hair pink or purple?

A: it is a cry for attention, all that innocense has made him a lonely boy.

Is this a joke on his part, trying to confuse us, or sincere?

A: I doubt it is serious, though I am sure he would look fetching in pink **trying to keep from lol'ing**

Is Nayt Nayt, or is Nayt Brian?

A: they are both the same entitiy. I think brian is the man he wishes he were, but we all know he is only Nayt. At least he is more interesting now, not sure if that'll help him find a mate though.

A: nah, we are all dreamers sharing a common dream. When we sleep we are not dreaming our own dream, but are actually seeing someone else's reality on another plane. We think it is our dream but our dream is actually our reality. When the poeple on the other plane dream, they see our reality and think it is their dream. That is why when you sleep, you will never look into a mirror. If you do, you will recognize it is not your face and wake up suddenly. The terror of the truth forces us to forget what we were just dreaming. When we die in our dreams, it is actually the other person who dies. That is why you almost never see the end, they die and you wake up as they are killed. When you die in reality, you are only waking up to find yourself on the next plane, and the dreaming starts anew. **if I haven't lost you by now, I have a feeling your mind is as warped as Mine >;o) **

Okay that question was a little out there, but you never know.
Back to practical questions:
How can I start a conversation with an attractive woman, who I know almost nothing about, and turn it into a relationship, and/or asking her out to a movie, keeping in mind that I am a somewhat shy geek?

A: say hello, that is always a good start. Then depending on the enviroment and situation, the rest is improvised. Each enviroment and each girl requires a different approach. I have lost track of the number of times I have been shot down. There really is no pattern to starting a conversation. After hello, I have found the best thing is to ask a question that you think she will be able to answer. A lot of the women I have talked to seem to really like to talk about themselves and their problems. They don't seem too interested in listening to you but they will occasionally ask a question. If you can get them to talk about themselves and at least try to seem that you care about what they are saying, you have a great start. I think it would be better to ask some of the girls here what they want to hear and maybe they will give you some musch better advice.

How do I avoid finding myself in a LJBF scenario, while theoretically fulfilling the "becoming friendly with person" phase before asking said person out?

A: unavoidable, if it is gonna happen, there is no stopping it. Some people can't be more than friends, that is why you should never bet your lot on any girl. Keep a backup in mind at all times. If you don't have someone else you are interested in, then you will find yourself alone when things don't work out. Sometimes the hunt is better than the kill, don't go for the difficult shot unless you are sure you have another chance later on. There will always be more prey, don't waste your time hunting only one.

Or, is that required, and if not, how do I burst into a relationship [without guns blazing, of course]?

A: you could always try to be different. girls get tired of hearing the same thing over and over. If you can come up with something original, maybe they will find you more interesting and want to see what you have going on.

Does the "I'm not usually this forward, but would you have lunch with me (or go to a movie with me?)" thing have a chance of working - because I am very rarely forward.

A: depends on the girl, some it will work, some will see a bunch of red flags and scurry away. at least if you ask, you are ahead of all those guys who sit by and idly wonder if they have a chance. Just make sure you are confident when you act forward. Girls can smell fear, and if you make the mistake of showing fear to a girl who is on her free time a Mistress, you will be squealing like a pig before the night is out.

P.S. Good show taking this to 5 pages ... perhaps this will become a bona fide institution to the Forums.

**I couldn't have done it without the support of geeks like you, this is a team effort. If I ever get famous, then you all can say "I remember time I got advice from Zorro The Fox when He was still a regular Joe just like me."**

Firstly, it's 'tough'...sorry, but for some reason that's been bugging me (as you can see, it's June 2nd ). But anywho, I think it would be cool if you streaked it green, although I don't know what your hair color is. Sometimes pink can look better than purple on guys. If you added some blonde streaks (w/ the pink ones), it'd look kinda give it a rocker style...er, at least it would make me think of Alice in Chain's frontman (I can never remember his name!). But it would have to be a little messy.

...but then again, YOU WEREN'T ASKING ME! Bah...

Well, since Z recommends asking a fellow geekette poster, here I am . You'll get your info. toasty-fresh from a page of "The Book"! YIPPY!

I agree w/ Zorro when he says that girls like talking about themselves and their problems. 'We' just like to get it off our chests and have someone to tell these episodes and feelings to.

However, I think this is apart of the whole "becoming friendly with person"-phase-before-asking-said-person-out thing. 'We' think that, since you're so willing to listen to our business of any type, you act as a regular (close) friend instead of a boyfriend. Just remember that when you do start moving into that phase (and you will, most likely), 1) there's a 90% chance that you won't be able to go back to being friends should you 'fail', and 2) try not to get too 'close' to them...you want to rush the friendship phase as fast as you can.

Start finding out things that you have in common as soon as possible. Ask questions about things she likes/enjoys doing, such as:

Favorite genre of movies
Does she like the outdoors
Books she may read/
Religion
Does she like the daytime or nighttime better
Places she likes going to
...etc...

These are just some questions that get me talking and asking the guy questions at the same time, although I'm extremely curious . I enjoy debating on said topics (especially religion). You could do the same in a friendly way, asking them a lot of "why" and "what feelings do you get out of <blank>". Also, try and find out if they have an important relation to things from their past. Ooh! Dreams! Things they wish to accomplish and what they want to become. If they start mentioning anything about changing themselves (physically, mentally, etc.), tell them that you love them for the true person they are.

Another very important thing is to make them feel needed and special. Girls like knowing that you thoroughly enjoy their company and conversations, love hearing their voice, etc. Mention some of the traits you like about them (i.e. the way their hair smells/looks [well I like that!], how they're always so honest, outspoken, etc., how beautiful they are everyday, features that accentuate them, how their opinion is always the right one and that it matters)...things like this will make them think you think of them as a different individual (compared to 'the rest') that's important to you.

On your line: Very good on the whole forward thing, but change your wording to "...., but would you ^like^ to have lunch/go to the movies with me?" Trust me, it doesn't look like a big difference, but to 'us', it matters. And, again as Z stated, we CAN sense fear (Ahhhh, run for your lives!). If you are gonna make it direct, DO IT that way. But at the same time, don't seem too confident - which I'm sure sweet little you won't do , just FYI in case ya get nervous. In fact, they (person being asked) may just say no on account that you're coming off as cocky, thinking they'll surely accept. I HATE that.

Ahhh, I sure am a crazy cucumber !

Hmmm I think it might have to do with mythology. The Romans name for Zues was Jupiter, but the Romans used the "I" for J and the "V" for U. The abbreviation for Jupiter for a Roman would be IV. I think the Romans didn't want the clock to read 1, 2, 3, god, 5...

Another idea for symmetry...with IIII instead of IV, you get 4 hour indications that use I, 4 that use V and 4 that use X.

Thank you Twinkle Toes, I don't have time to reply much more than this, but I like and appreciate your comment, particularly from the woman's point of view. [Not to say that Your comment wasn't appreciated Zorro, it was - most notably as it covered every question posed.]

I did have a backup lined up while I was striking out in my every attempt to get this girl, but she's now it, and I don't necessarily have a backup. Now I must summon the courage to ask her, and find words to do that. And TT, I'm aware of the "would you like to do this, that or the other thing?" - I think I failed to use an option before and saw the error of my ways.

I'm so glad Twinkie helped out on that one, I've not had the best of luck picking people up. I have noticed some trends, but each girl is a different animal. The worst part is, they seem to think they are all the same and that we are supposed to know how to approach them. There are always exceptions, but at least we got one girls point of view and that is much better than any advice you can get from the boys >;o) ................Z

Start finding out things that you have in common as soon as possible. Ask questions about things she likes/enjoys doing, such as:

Favorite genre of movies **Zorro is an anime freak, though the collection of hardcore porn tends to make them run >;o) **

Does she like the outdoors **nothing like a weekend in the middle of nowhere without showers to find out how much you love someone. If you find yourself still willing to snuggle on the last day, then you found a good mate**

Books she may read/ **Zorro has tons of manga, and even more porn. not a great mix, but the King and Barker novels are always a good topic.**

Religion **if you see more than one cross in plain sight, run. Religion can be a touchy subject, much like politics. If you can survive a conversation in religion, you've got it made. This one is important and is a big deal maker or breaker.**

Does she like the daytime or nighttime better **If it weren't for work, Zorro would love the nights more. Night people have more fun.**

Places she likes going to **if she says bedroom, I know I am in for a wild night. It doesn't always mean she's ready, but it is a great ice breaker.**
...etc...

These are just some questions that get me talking and asking the guy questions at the same time, although I'm extremely curious

**I deserve extra credit points for biting My tongue on that one >;o) **

. I enjoy debating on said topics (especially religion). You could do the same in a friendly way, asking them a lot of "why" and "what feelings do you get out of <blank>". If they start mentioning anything about changing themselves (physically, mentally, etc.), tell them that you love them for the true person they are.

**wow, good stuff there, I gotta write this down >;o) **

Another very important thing is to make them feel needed and special.

**I hope you don't mean special as in "challenged", they might not like being looked at as helpless..........jk..**

**still taking notes >;o) **

**don't be too scared, but don't be too confident. is that like being rough, yet in a gentle way. Or how about fast, but a little slow.**

Well, I'm VERY different from most girls anywho (from most people for that matter). I like contraversial things and having deep conversations about them with occasional heated arguments. However, I think dragonman would realize if she's one of those religous-'fanatics'(not to offend anyone) or not.

Surely, Z. Since I don't have a lot of freedom to do what I like, at night after my mom's left for work (which is around 10-10:30 pm.), I go out and just take nice walks, sometimes in the nice pitch-black forests we have around here. It's a tad creepy, but I'm one of those people who love that feeling of what dangerous thing could happen.

Hmm...more like fast but slow. What I meant is that you don't want to get over-excited or too relaxed (which I've actually seen before, although it's hard to elaborate on) with your situation. But at the same time, don't think about what you're really saying. Just let most things come to you. If you like/love someone and want to be with them, you should be able to be comfortable around them - don't force yourself (I have done this, and it's not fun).

A; everytime I think I have you figured out, you thorw Me a curve ball. It's hard enough to decipher the female codes, but when the female uses an alternating code group, it makes it exponentially more difficult. For all I know I could be sitting in the woods with My bag in hand on a snipe hunt. **we got a friend with the snipe hunt, it is so much fun** I need more info before I can make a accurate identification. on the plus side, I too change angles once in a while to throw My friends off My scent. Every time they get comfortable with Me, I do or say something that puts them back to square one. I find it keeps things fresh and interesting.

Of course I'm curious about being curious...who isn't - well, maybe except up-tight, fruit-like people (a.k.a. Nayt)...sorry, but you'd better be ready to hear a rant rather than a rave when I'm talkin' about Nayt...

Wow, I didn't know the wise Zorro was trying to get a scoop out of me - Oops! That one slipped, heh...

But really now...am I that confusing? What 'curves balls' have I been throwin' your way, Z?

And what else do you need to know about me? I'm an open book ...(seems like you are, too)

What have you figured out about me so far, eh? EH?

Well, I know that if I had a clone, it would reveal all of my deep dark thoughts and become engulfed in evil...YAY!

I like to reveal many things

I think I understand you...I could lower myself into my cold, deep, evil, 'nasty ' depths, too, but no one would want to follow...it's okay, Zorro...you and I just have to bite and stick it out to the end (this bit isn't right in my mind )...

**I try to figure out where everyone stands, it makes it easier to converse with them. the more interesting people I will spend a little more effort on.**

But really now...am I that confusing? What 'curves balls' have I been throwin' your way, Z?

**you have slowly been getting kinkier with each week. It seems as though you are opening up a bit more each time. I am not used to naughty geek girls, usually I have found them timid. I find Myself rewriting the mental notebook as we speak.**

And what else do you need to know about me? I'm an open book ...(seems like you are, too)

**I'll let you surprise Me, if I ask too many questions I might gind out too much >;o) **

What have you figured out about me so far, eh? EH?

**can't say, those documents have been marked classified. Though I hear the edited versions will be released to the public.**

If the brain is the largest sex organ, wouldn't you expect there to be "naughty geek girls"?? Then again, "timid" to you could be too much to handle for a regular geek. It's all relative, isn't it?
