Tiger Mail to Leopard Mail... fixing the missing mail

I recently upgraded to Mac OS X Leopard on my Powerbook, but was shocked to see that all my Mail was missing, and the app wouldn't quit. After a few panicky moments, I searched on Google to see if others had the same problem.

Well they did, and luckily, thanks to the Apple Discussion Boards, I found a fix. So I thought I'd share it here in case other find it useful in their travels.

The problem:
After upgrading to leopard Mail has all the messages are missing. Account preferences seem to be OK but you just cannot see any messages. The app can't send, can't receive, and won't even Quit. The acual messages are still there in the user/Library/Mail folder, but the Mail app is blind to them and hangs.

The solution:
-Force Quit Mail.

-Navigate to your user/Library/Mail folder. Or, from the Finder's Go menu, choose Go to Folder. Go to this location (type or paste the tollowing, then click Go): ~/Library/Mail

-Remove the MessageRules.plist, MessageRules.plist.backup, MessageSorting.plist and MessageSorting.plist.backup (Note: you may not have the MessageRules files if you didn't make any in Tiger). Put them somewhere handy, dropping them on your desktop is fine.

-Start Mail again, let it launch, and then Quit it. Put the removed files back into that same Mail folder again. Replace any of the files if necessary.

You should be good to go again!

SlotZ Racer Giveaway!

SlotZ Racer!
Forum member Zwilnik and his brother have a new iPhone game out, and it's really nice. It's SlotZ Racer for iPhone, and they are generously offering to give away two copies of it!!

SlotZ Racer lets players race against the computer or friends; a unique control system allows up to 4 people to race on a single iPhone! Features an intuitive track editor to give the player the ultimate freedom to design their very own courses, and offers a wide selection of cars to race. Compete for laps or against the clock in Time Trials, drive an endurance race, (with simulated days and nights), or play a ‘Quick Race’ to jump straight into the action. The game also includes unlockable new circuits, cars, track locations and championship challenges to keep the action exciting and fresh! Players have the option to play with lane changing, or fixed lanes for the racing purists.

This is really cool stuff and looks amazing. You can find out more on StrangeFlavour's SlotZ page, ... the SlotZ Racer page over at the mighty Freeverse, or you can just go buy it on the iTunes Store, (for the next few hours it's only 99 cents!)

To enter the giveaway, just post a reply in this thread. One post per human please! (Note: these giveaways are from the US iTunes store, so you'd need to have (or make) a US account to use the special code.) Giveaway will end on Friday! Start your engines!

20 websites every Apple fan must bookmark

The fine folks over at MakeUseOf.com have put together a wee list of 20 websites every Apple fan must bookmark. Of course twenty is just the tip of the iceberg, but it is a good start, and we were quite honoured to be a part of that list. Yep, The Joy of Tech is there... thanks!

A triplet of links I would like to add to that list would be... MacMerc.com, (which now features the very awesome MacMerc TV episodes), iFixit.com, an amazing site for do-it-yourself repairing of your Apple computer or iPod, with great free guides, and that grand ol' staple MacSurfer... an awesome site for Mac news of all sorts.

Oops, and how could I forget the venerable Tidbits, Mac news for the rest of us!

Snaggy's quick and easy one-line movie reviews with spoilers.

Frost-Nixon: Fantastic, except for the drunken phone call part they totally made up.

Day the Earth Stood Still (2008): A Day Standing Still without "Klaatu barada nikto" is like a Day without sunshine... WTF were they thinking?

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button: Forrest Gump meets the Mork from Ork race, in a creepy movie born with a premise but without a good story.

Vicky Cristina Barcelona: Brunette actresses beware, if you are starring in a Woody Allen flick, he may destroy your character after one romp in the hay.

Mamma Mia: Suicide pills are recommend before viewing, as the pain felt after viewing is too much to bear.
