Take Control of Your Passwords!

Passwords. They are probably the most important thing you have, that you are probably completely lackluster about. Don't be, the consequences of a password breach arr huge, not just for your privacy, but for your business, finances, and security. The incredible folks at TidBITS have a new eBook that I highly recommend. It will get you up to speed on why your passwords need to be secure, and how to do that, and how to make doing that easy. Here's the author, Joe Kissell's video...

And notice the cool comic over on their site. :-)

Honestly, why are you still reading? Get over there and buy it! It's the best 10 bucks you will ever spend! Take Control of your Passwords before someone takes control of you!

What's up with the JoT?

JoT!

You may have noticed that The Joy of Tech comic is on a new page. That's because it's now being hosted by Tapastic. Nitrozac and I have a chance to make some very much needed compensation for our work, if we can get enough eyeballs over there. For although we get over a million page views a month at our normal site, it gets harder and harder to survive on the diminishing trickle that advertising brings in. Our traffic grows, but so do adblockers and workarounds, or people posting up our comic to image sites. It's great to be popular, but without monitization, the bills (and us) don't get paid. We've refused pop-ups and other awful ad formats for over 13 years now, hoping we could make it up with other ads, sponsorships, SuperFans, donations, and sales. Unfortunately that has not been the case.

So we're trying out a place that will pay us for our work. We are aiming for 250,000 views on Tap by the end of February, which will make a huge difference for us. So please, check us out on Tap!

Tapastic is a young site, and obviously needs tweaking, but they are open to suggestions and act fast on them. Please let them know what bugs you and send them your suggestions.

Thanks again for sticking with us and we really appreciate your understanding as to why we have to make some changes, try out some new things, and take some risks, in order to keep the comic, and its artists, kicking.

Season 2 of Game of Thrones is a GoT to have!

GoT to have!

If you're a fan of Game of Thrones, you probably know Season 2 is now available on DVD and Blu-ray. And if you are a fan of Game of Thrones, you are probably going to buy Season 2 no matter what I say in this review. Rest assured, I have nothing but good things to say about this new release!

GoT was meant to be seen in high definition. The costumes and sets are spectacular, as are the close-ups of the actors. The detail you can see on the armour and other clothing is incredible, (it's even better than watching it in HDTV on HBO), and it really adds a new level of indulgence to re-watching the series.

As for extras, the discs contain several bonus features, including charater studies, a War of the Five Kings Interactive Guide & Creating the Battle of Blackwater Bay featurette, and tons more. I loved the character profiles, especially hearing the actors talk about their character, but as soon as the last was finished I wanted more! (yes, I'm a GoT-geek!)
Here's a quick guide to what is onboard each disc:
DVD features:
-Creating the Battle of Blackwater Bay - See how the epic Battle of Blackwater Bay was brought to life in this exclusive, in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at the climatic episode. The 30 minute feature showcases never-before-seen interviews with cast and crew.
-Game of Thrones: Inner Circle - Actors Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Lena Headey, Michelle Fairley and Liam Cunningham talk in detail about their experiences shooting season two in this roundtable discussion moderated by executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.
-The Religions of Westeros - Hear author George R.R. Martin, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss discuss the competing religions in the series and how they influence the various characters in Westeros and beyond.
-Character Profiles - Profiles of seven major characters as described by the actors portraying them including Renly Baratheon, Stannis Baratheon, Robb Stark, Theon Greyjoy and more.
-Audio Commentaries - 12 commentaries with cast and crew including David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, George R.R. Martin, Emilia Clarke, Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington and more.

Blu-ray with HBO Select - includes all the above DVD features plus:
-War of the Five Kings - Track the claims, strategies and key players involved in the battle for the Iron Throne with this interactive guide that follows the movements of various armies detailing their victories and defeats.
-Histories & Lore - 19 animated histories detailing the mythology of Westeros and Essos as told from the varying perspectives of the characters themselves and featuring, in-part, illustrations from Game of Thrones storyboard artist Will Simpson.
-In-Episode Guide - In-feature resource that provides background information about on-screen characters, locations and relevant histories.
-Hidden Dragon Eggs - Find the hidden dragon eggs to uncover even more never-before-seen content.

It's a ton of fresh GoT, and a must have for a true fan, and a must see for those who love costumes and sets. A great excuse to pick up a Blu-ray player if you don't have one already!

Remember, Valar Morghulis, so don't Morghulis before seeing GoT on Blu-ray!!

The Joy of Tech now on Tapastic

JoT on Taptastic!
We're trying out a new platform for our comic. It's simpler, and for the time being, there are no ads, so that is very nice indeed. We'll always be here at GeekCulture.com, but you can now find us over at Tapastic!

Thunderbirds are GO! (again)

FAB

According to ITV, a new series of Thunderbirds shows is being produced and will find it's way to our screens in 2015, fifty years after the original debuted.

But will it be in SUPERMARIONATION? Not quite according to the report. "The new series will combine CGI animation and live-action model sets, and will "affectionately pay tribute" to the classic show."

Hmm, will that be FAB or drab? Let's hope it's FAB!

Thanks to Craig for the tip!
