I dunno, I don't think so. I go out and go to more social activities than my wife (a relative non-computer user) does. Granted, we talk a lot about computers while playing Magic or D&D, but still... "It's social. Demented and sad. But Social." ------------------ IP: Logged |

welll.... There's always User Groups. I started a Linux User Group at my school. I am also aware of PC User Groups, Unix User Groups, and Mac User Groups, although I have never attended a meeting for any of these. IP: Logged |

User groups are great things. I am a member of the local mac user group and also the Unix user group on campus. It is a great place to meet people and often times we go non geek things. We will go rock climbing, play DAAPture the flag and other fun things. So i guess in that respect it just isolates us to a smaller world. Nayt ------------------ IP: Logged |

The best group of friends I've ever had, I met while working in a tech support job. We'd sit around instructing lusers how to use their computers all day, then hang out into the night playing Magic, watching movies, running naked through public fountains (well I mostly just took pictures of that particular activity) and so on. While I was living in Portland, I stumbled upon a newsgroup called pdx.singles dedicated to -- wait for it -- single people who lived in Portland. The group had informal get togethers for newsgroup regulars about twice a month. Had it not been for my computer I would have missed out on a lot of fun times with that group -- one member of which even became something more than just a friend, for a time. Like anything else in life, I'd say the specific tools don't matter quite so much as how you use them. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I think if you want to be isloated from the world, you can definitely do so through computer use instead of having to live as a hermit on a mountain. OTOH if you want to keep in touch with family and friends that are separated geographically, the computer is a wonderful tool of communication. I would say the computer opens up more opportunities to meet people in RL, as Akira said, and make friends locally and globally. IP: Logged |

I think to be tottaly isolated one would be a hermit. You would live up in the far reaches of canada or alaska, you would not have a computer, telephone, newpaper. You would know only what was around you. You woudl have no knowledge of the rest of the world, or have any interaction with people. Nayt ------------------ IP: Logged |
