What exactly do you do on Canada Day. I mean, what are you celebrating? Is it like the Queen's Jubilee (i.e. a pointless opportunity for everyone to get stinking drunk)?

Canada Day celebrates the events that occurred on July 1, 1867, when the British North America Act created the Canadian federal government. The BNA Act proclaimed "one Dominion under the name of Canada. Drum roll please.... the birth of The Dominion of Canada.

Shortened to "The Dominion" sometime in the 24th century.

If you must, think of it as our version of the US's Independence Day.

Here's a link to Canada Day FAQ's
http://www.southam.com/nmc/ohcanada/news/origin.html

What do we do? Most people have a holiday, so they do all those things Canadians do on holidays.... see friends, go on hikes, drink beer, watch TV, watch fireworks, etc...

Or get a group of friends together and visit a waterslide park

We spent 5.5 hours today sliding down pipes, riding inner tubes, soaking in the giant hot tub and cooking burgers in the BBQ area. The mini golf course was partially flooded from heavy thunderstorms so we didn't get to play.

With the exception of one guy who had never learned to swim and was bravely trying something new, everybody had a great time.

That sounds like the same time the rest of the world grew sane and started emulating Canada, instead of the US.

WOOOHOOOO, I like Canadia <me own personal spelling, for various reasons, anywho, I've got several Candadian friends, and I've yet to meet a Canadian that I didn't like, though that may have to do with the fact that easily 90% of the canadians I've met are extreme slackers, and most of them geekly in tendencies, if not knowledge

I don't think he's retiring back to CA anytime soon, but at least he's semi-retired and he'll never appear in another Star Trek movie!

We do have CA to thank for Mike Myers (Please, please take him back!)and Peter Jennings (a man who should be disowned by both countries!)

I can't think of how many others are from our neighbors from the north, but sometimes they give us a bit of fun.

Only inasmuch as my mother is from Yorkshire (from Clifton); my father is from Birmingham. Yet, I was born in Hertfordshire and have lived here all my life. We've been up to Yorkshire every year to visit my grandmother, but now she's deceased, I don't envision myself having any reason to go up to York again.

I just love Yorkshire accents, especially the ones in Worms ;) (itself a Yorkshire game, made in Wakefield) I've converted the entire .sfx file to standard audio, and I played it to a Yorkshire student I know, and he thought it was hilarious :)

I live year round in Yorkshire, and always have... yet, surprisingly, I don't have any kind of accent. People around here are always asking me "are yeh from down in t'South, love?", or they think that I'm incredibly posh and stuck up because of the way I speak. Nyeh.

Maybe we should be judged by the way we type, or what we type, instead. Surely that says more about a person?

Not sure what you mean by the "way we type" - are you referring to spelling ability, choice of vocabulary (including slang, cutesy phrases), methods of formatting posts (like my quoting style), or fitting a spylar™ Webcam to everyone's room when their not looking and watching everyone's fingers as they type? ;)

I think you can made judgements on that, about people's personalities, and so on, but there are limits (e.g. is someone who can't spell just unfortunate, or lazy, or dyslexic, or short on time and harrassed?).

What people say is another big clue as to who they are, but bear in mind that you must put every on of their posts together to compare, to get a full picture.

And even then, I don't think it will tell you everything about them by far - depends how open they are.

I just prefer not to judge - everyone is who they are, unique, with good and bad. Although I'm getting exceedingly irratated by people's quirks in online chat these days, I'm not sure why, what's happened to me?

As for your accent, pity - not saying yours is bad, though, just it'd be sweet if you had a cute Yorkshire accent ;) But then, my dad puts one on, and sounds more Yorkshire than my mum (she never did). I did receive some pronunciation from them, though - I think all three of us have neutral accents, although my sister took on a local accent to avoid that idea of sounding posh that afflicted us both (though I was always of the out... not even crowd, just out, so I kept my accent :).

Anyhows, end of ramble.

I only say that we might want to try text analysis because it seems that an accent says a lot about you before you even say anything worthy of note. For example, not all people from Essex are stupid/'common', but that's what the commonly held view is.

Judging people by text would eradicate the 'accent barrier', but you're right, it is very limiting. As for people not being very open when they type, it's the same when they speak. If anything, the net would allow you to be more open, because you've got a degree of anonymity to hide behind. If someone disagrees with what you say, they're not going to come and throw a brick through your window. Plus, in places like a forum, where the whole point is to talk about yourself and what matters to you with strangers, you could feel more confident, because the environment has been specially created so that people can listen to what you have to say.

However, it is also easier to completely fabricate things on the net, because of that self same anonymity.

Ah, yes, I see what you mean.

If anything, the net would allow you to be more open...
I think it just varies from person to person. I know I'm far more open online now that I ever was in person, even with people I know in real life, because it's easier to say things when you're not face to face. I know of people who are closed online, but maybe in real life it would be easier for them.

And yes, no bricks (although in more... "dodgy" (for lack of a better word) online places (such as IRC), you can open yourself to hackers and suffer denial of service attacks and so on, but I tend to be found in more decent IRC channels. At the moment, I'm only in the GeekCulture (irc.slashnet.org) #joyoftech channel, but I was in Undernet #macintosh for some time. Yet, I feel just as stupid and foolish, and ashamed at myself, from being wrong online as in real life (whatever that is), but at least I can hide away and no-one will know. I mean, my first post here was a bitter rant at some test Snaggy posted, and I got flamed for that.

Plus, in places like a forum ... you could feel more confident, because the environment has been specially created so that people can listen to what you have to say.
Well, I'm not sure what in real life it might compare to, but yes, in real life I don't really see any equivalent. Clubs and societies might, but yes, as you say, the cover of anonymity does make things very different, and actually going there in the first place etc is harder than just visiting a webpage. The option to lurk, say as little (and not seem a loner as a result) or as much as you like, and so on, is another benefit.

However, it is also easier to completely fabricate things on the net, because of that self same anonymity.
Yep. But I don't - you might see an alternative personality of me, but I don't fabricate anything.

IRL i don't allow myself to get close enough to people to be wrong... I tend to keep myself closed off. On the net, I can be wrong wrong wrong, and yes, I feel stupid, but it's easier to avoid whoever flamed you, or you feel more confident fighting your corner.

I don't think I'd be that bad around anyone, but for the fact that I'm generally never around anyone, apart from the other people in the office, and people at bus stops, to whom I rarely speak. But then, I never reach my rambling or ranting state with anyone outside of home or the office, because I never even get into small talk properly - it is meaningless, generally, I just don't care about anyone's life. And even topical conversations online about computing usually make me bitter.

On the net, I can be wrong wrong wrong, and yes, I feel stupid, but it's easier to avoid whoever flamed you, or you feel more confident fighting your corner.
Confident? That comes with being able to argue convincingly I guess. As for avoiding people, well, yes, but in the forums I'll still re-encounter the flames. Dunno what I'm arguing here, really.

Well, the disparity between my nature here and in real life might be a clue. I suspect visual clues (my face) might have been an adequate substitute for what I would never bring myself to say to her, but I assume you missed the post where I explained the bitter irony - she's married. Secondly, there was/is another girl, but I never really got a chance to start a conversation with her, I did kinda try once, but I don't think my observations of what models of bus are used on what routes, and their direction of approach to the station, allowing me to determine which bus was ours from a distance (rather inconvenient bus interchange), stammered out semi-incomprehensibly, did anything for me. I think she has a boyfriend anyhow, unless he is her brother. Though she is almost never around. And for once, I was able to do the reading-material test, and I was not impressed (some lame magazine, it seemed).

But no, I'm no bold, courageous, dashing charmer. I just sit and play cards on my palmtop and keep glancing to see if the bus is here. And, yes, observing who else njkol raen taθ ("young and pretty") happens to be around. Especially couples in love... (life by proxy).

But anyhow... Canada day... hrm... James is in Canada, so the country must have some merits :)

It's my experience that a girl can tell when a guy is hopelessly floundering around, looking for something, anything to talk about. If she is worth the aggravation, then she'll sympathise and help you along

observing who else njkol raen ta? ("young and pretty") happens to be around. Especially couples in love... (life by proxy).
I know what you mean. I remember queueing for a taxi at 1am in the middle of Leeds, once. I was surrounded by people who were either hopelessly in love, or fast on their way to being so. And there was I, on my lonesome, feeling like the bubblegum under their expensive shoes.

But anyhow... Canada day... hrm... James is in Canada, so the country must have some merits

Oh, now I remember - Friday, that is (my memory is bad). Yes, I was wondering where you were :)

...then she'll sympathise and help you along :)
It would still be a one-sided conversation, especially as she'd not be trying by any means that are likely to work (that is, find any sort of subject that we'd both want to converse about (not sure I even know any).

And there was I, on my lonesome, feeling like the bubblegum under their expensive shoes.
I don't think I see it as being quite that bad for me - I just strongly feel that I'm missing out on something I desire. Your feeling equates a bit more with my feeling that I don't belong anywhere, and never fit in. Oddly, Geek Culture is somewhere where I don't feel that as much, but I don't really fit in here either (esp. when getting flamed). I'm just a sort of drifter - this is the next stage on from Undernet #macintosh on IRC (another long story). One day, I'll just disappear from here, and never be seen again, just drift through a few more places. I'll hang around here until something becomes of the Geek Culture Code (probably death), anyhow.

Most people are. If you think about it, most peolple who post here do so irregularly, and build up their stars over quite a while. There are only a few who could be considered 'stalwarts'. Anyway, there is no real geek 'type' to fit in with, really

The length of my hair evident in photos of me should be some indication that I plan to keep mine :) As for the screaming bit - do you want me to record it and e-mail it off to you, too? ;)

Well, yes, that is true, but then, you learn almost nothing, and will have probably forgotten who they are if you ever see them again. I'm thinking of all the regulars, and there are quite a few (quantumfluff, Steen, snupy, Zorro, you (of course), and so on).

Anyway, there is no real geek 'type' to fit in with, really
I was thinking of those geeks who share (to whatever small extent) my interests - i.e. computer geeks. Even they are a very varied lot, but I still feel a long way from them.

As for the screaming bit - do you want me to record it and e-mail it off to you, too? ;)
Oh no, that won't be necessary. If your grief is appropriately measured to the situation, then I should be able to hear you up in Yorkshire without any problems ;)

Even they are a very varied lot, but I still feel a long way from them.
This is not necessarily a bad thing. Feelings of isolation lead to fear, which leads to anger, which leads to hate, which leads to Jedi-gone-wrong status! Ah, I'm being flippant. Sorry. Something tells me you're not looking for me to offer solutions to every problem in your life in a handy bitesize chunk. So I offer humour instead! Be thankful ;)

Now, though, if I really could scream that loud, think of the possibilities we'd have with that awesome sound wave. However, I fear that I could only offer it once in a lifetime - my face might get blown apart by the force. We'd need a high turnaround of volunteers for this, but I'm sure we can find enough people willing to volunteer to aid us in the cause of Science... ;)

Might have problems with noise regulation by-laws, though...

Actually, yes, you are perfectly correct there. In fact, bitesize solutions are only effective really if there is provision in the recipient to affect such changes, assuming the solutions are even correct at all. The former is not the case, and the latter I cannot trust, nor do I want, considering that I don't wish to trouble you in any way.

Further, humour is always what I appreciate the most when unhappy :)

Bitesize Shredded Wheat would be OK, though, if it wasn't always so burnt :P

Considering the circumstances, I think it would be worth the sacrifice It wouldn't be so bad; look at me - I managed to collect brain matter with one hand and type endless witticisms with the other - you learn to adapt...

We'd need a high turnaround of volunteers for this
Many millions of angry worms might do the trick...

Would sir like that hot or cold? We have options of normal and chocolate milk also, if sir prefers...
