I'm sorry, everyone, if you were enjoying reading all this. I'm particularly sorry that Zebby is depressed by the move; that wasn't my intention. I've sent you mail, Zeb, that might help clear things up.

So, cya everyone! I'll continue reading, and if I see something completely objectionable, then I won't be able to help myself, and I'll reply. But I'll probably see you all elsewhere, anyway...

Well, I must say, this thread took me quite a bit of time to read. Uilleann and skylar, you outdid yourselves (perhaps this is truer than its lighter intended meaning). Rather than mention a few things to uilleann randomly, which seems to confuse him, I will attempt to cull the thoughts I have on this thread into a meaningful post.

bleurgh Hmm, this is a term I've not heard before - could it be one of those terms used more exclusively in England, like lorries?

BTW, these are in no particular order. Bleurgh really stuck out in my mind when I read this thread the other day - I'm just getting to replying now, this is another Zaurus moment (I'm comfortably composing this while under the sheets with a dead tree copy of the thread - even at 4 pages to the sheet, it took 8 pages -- too much to read on a CRT comfortably [hmm, comfort... twice in sentence - I really like my comfort don't I? And my parentheses and brackets ]).

Poor Snaggy, you thought being a moderator and all-around good guy would leave you free from having you thread hijacked - no one's safe from this. Besides, some of the more interesting things around here come out of hijacked threads. If it wasn't for spungo and snupy, the phrase 'text sex' might never have come to be here. Well Snaggy, I wish you and Nitrozac a happy, and very belated Canada Day! (and Bregalad, and all our other Canadian members, whose names elude me now).

Regarding Canadian celebrities, I saw an article in my newspaper about the "anti-Britneys," and it said that Avril Lavigne is from Canada. I guess that explains the French name for me. While I may have mixed feelings about her music I still think she's better than 'Britney.' Avril was quoted as saying that she thinks that the over-sexism is stupid in music and I would have to agree. Sure, Britney looks kind of good (though is really unappealing in some respects) but she is an airhead, and just sings whatever she's given, in whatever thoroughly provocative she's handed. I also don't think she's a terribly good singer. And I'm certain rumor is true that she had slightly hidden messages in a song or two. I'm not the only person to have heard her say "I wanna have sex with you" in her poorly spelled "I'm a slave 4 u." Okay, that was totally off topic except for it's Canadian ties, but 90% of the comments in this thread are, so I'm not too worried about that.

Hmm, Yorkshire... I wonder if either of you will kill me for saying that I used to watch (and liked) the BBC series All Creature's Great and Small about fiction character James Herriot ['eriot], created and based on veterinarian James Alfred Wight, as well as his similarly titled books. The Yorkshire Dales looked quite beautiful in it.

Skylar said (paraphrasing from paper): It's my experience....guy hopelessly floundering...she'll sympathize and help you along.
Well, that's me, hopelessly floundering. I have been fortunate on occasion to find the sympathetic girl who didn't just laugh and/or walk away, but nothing huge came of it. In one case, it was pretty tricky for me to ask this girl who had a boyfriend to a dance, though I said, as friends (in between the blabbering/stuttering/incoherent mumbling). That kind of went well.
OTOH, I asked this other girl if she would be going to my college's Winter Ball (man I fumbled over asking that), and she said she was going, and I said I'd look forward to seeing her there. D'oh - I forgot to ask, "are you going with anyone?" "What's your last name?" "What's your number?" Attempts to find her afterwards to ask these useful questions failed, and then it snowed that night ever so lightly, and my parents wouldn't let me go, despite my furious protests, as they skidded a wee bit earlier, when it was actually snowing. I didn't see that girl anywhere for a few months, and then she was with friends, so I was too nervous to approach her.
Now, I met this interesting girl at work, and I think she virtually started conversation with me, after I had been speaking to her boss about something computer related. The next time I came back, I had the pleasant chance to just speak lightly with her, and she engaged me in discussion. Which leads me to direct towards uilleann the importance of small talk (&& ! the prog.lang.). Some of initial discussions probably featured a bit of smalltalk, progressed to more practical personal discussion. We've since spoken ro each other on many occasions, with me finding a reason to stop by [whoops, I really shouldn't have taken over half an hour to pick up a computer - that one I feel kind of guilty about]. However, I have not been able to find a way to take her on a date, our schedules don't seem to mesh - she has class in the evenings, and has been going home over the weekends. And today she tells me that tomorrow (Wed.) is her last day of work for the summer, she's going to go home and take a vacation after that. Thurs. is her last day of class, so I'm going to see if I can take her ro lunch, but I have a bad feeling it won't work. Anyway, I guess my main point before being sidetracked was the viability of a nice person helping you out, though in this case I may have already been LJBF'd.

Skylar said (paraphrasing from paper): Would sir like that hot or cold.... humble servant sky.
/me is insanely jealous of uilleann .
Wow! I could even stand to go for sarcasm like that - though I'm sure I've received similar comments, they probably weren't so beautifully signed. Since I've been on the receiving end of what follows, I think I can go ahead and say it, even though uilleann denies the idea - You guys make a cute couple! (at least in text.) People have mistaken me and a female friend or two of mine to be going out based on our style together, though we were "just friends" (though perhaps we should have been more), and I guess I pass this on in the same manner.

Sorry Zwilnik, I don't drink, so I don't lool for holidays to celebrate in such a fashion. Although it would probably get me a better shot with some really good looking girls I know, I find their desire to get drunk rather unappealing. And interestingly enough, I can't legally drink anyway (I'm 20), though that doesn't many people, let alone the aforementioned girls who are my age.

Quoth Uilleann: Both GameMaster....helping girls in their programming class.
Add one dragon to that list . I am a SI (Supplemental Instructor)[tutor] for Comp.Prog.1&2, though I'll just be doing CP2 this semester. Whoo! I had a number of nice girls in my sessions. It irritated me when the annoying stupid guys showed up . Heh, because I'm a nice guy, when some of the girls had a scheduling problem, I held an extra unannounced session for them. So one day a week, I'd hold a session for my 3 'prized students' - and I more seriously use that term, they did much better than many of the others, they understood things better than the rest (perhaps slightly from extra attention).

...Dawson's Creek...
Hmm, I had not read this when I repeatedly used the aforementioned as an example of the "drivel" on American TV. I didn't even know they managed to push it around the world... @#$% Aaron Spelling - I think he's the guy behind it , he produces a lot of other similar garbage.

....synths....guitars....
Hmmm, both are cool, though my father actually has a synthesizer in our basement right next to y computer. However, I am not musically inclined. I kind of like the sound of some guitar stuff, and have a couple of MP3s featuring such stuff. There's probably more "crunchy, messy guitars" in my directory entitled, "dark-angry," for those little pick-me ups while in a grim and/or vile mood

...thinking too much...Uilleann, oh never...
/me can't keep straight face, ROFL.
Actually, I too tend to think way too much about things - take this response for example.

I have a feeling I'd do better at some things if I didn't think so much - like my dating situation, or lack thereof. I tend to think too much about that, inevitably putting off whatever I've been thinking of doing. Thinking is useful to me at work, especially sice of coworker routinely shuts off his brain.
If I was thinking well, I'd stop writing this, at 2:18AM, and get sleep, since I've got a meeting tomorrow, but I can't quite sleep, and I've now got that girl on my mind, and am thinking about how to ask her out before she leaves.

...names...
I personally think "Sarah, John, Steve, and Daniel" are all good names, and if I ever have children, I want them to have such a name. Keep in mind what that person will have to deal with in life, having to spell their name for anyone who needs it, and facing mispronunciation routinely. Mind you, I have an easy name to spell, that I think is a solid upstanding name. And I think your [real] name is good, Zeb, though I don't presently know anyone with over here though I used to.

Regarding the demise of this section, I think the conversation that went on here was most interesting, but I could not imagine it being sustained much longer. So thanks for an interesting read uilleann and skylar.

P.S. Uilleann, evidently I didn't write about the one thing you probably expected me to write about in this diatribe, and I'm leaving it that way.

aye, thinking too much sucks... Looking at the entire thread it's probably only a half hour to an hour conversation, just long a drawn out, with a couple people butting in and sticking around near the end..

I think I can guess what it might have been, although I'm not the mind reader everyone seems to take me for. Ultimately, it makes no odds anyhow.

(perhaps this is truer than its lighter intended meaning)
You what?

Rather than mention a few things to uilleann randomly, which seems to confuse him
Only when they come out of the blue, make little sense or don't seem to have a point to them, and when you ignore all requests for clarification as you're too busy firing another half-dozen random statements at me... :)

Hmm, this is a term I've not heard before - could it be one of those terms used more exclusively in England, like lorries?
Perhaps; it takes social interaction to know what words are in use, don't forget ;)

Which leads me to direct towards uilleann the importance of small talk (&& ! the prog.lang.).
Haha, SmallTalk, heard of it but never used it, something like or to do with LISP, or something. As for small talk, did I ever say it was unimportant? I know I've said it (seems) meaningless, but sometimes the real issue is not the one I say the most about. I think the reasons I've given, and those merely implied or that people can pick up on (or maybe they're not clear at all) should explain the problems posed by small talk.

Like Bregalad's comment to me in another topic, you're offering advice but seeming to be totally unaware of the reasons (some stated) why the advice, at least by itself, is completely of no use.

/me is insanely jealous of uilleann ;).
Wh...? It's very rare that someone worthy is jealous of me. I guess I'd take it as a compliment or something if it weren't for this remark:
You guys make a cute couple! (at least in text.)
We're not a couple, and from what I've read here and more so in e-mails, I feel that we're not suited. Of course, I really don't know, but this really got out of hand, and quite where the two of us stand, I don't know. I did have "feelings" for her previously, because indeed I was equally enjoying her humour. However, a relationship needs more than that, which I don't know that we have. I wouldn't worry, dragonman, I'm not holding out any hope. And I didn't get that comment about liking it hot or cold anyhow.

Keep in mind what that person will have to deal with in life...
Of course I do, and that is the very point of not using names like "Sarah, John, Steve, and Daniel". When you give people common names, you regularly get difficulties. Did I mean Chris (Moore) or Chris (Redit)? By Steve, do I mean Steve (Jobs), Steve (Gale), Steve (Hunt), or... I never have a clue who my sister's on about, all her acquaintances from school seem to have one of about three names, so there at least two of everyone. Sarah is a bad example for me - it is lili's real name, and it is time for me to forget about her. But my mum works with a Sarah (did?), as do I, and my sister mentions a few. They're everywhere.

and facing mispronunciation routinely.
That depends entirely on your choice. I know "Elrond" is too pretentious to use, but how many ways could you reasonably pronounce that? Real names, e.g. Thomas, can be much worse.

So thanks for an interesting read uilleann and skylar.

I've never heard of Avril before. Maybe I'll have to search for some Oggs or MP3s. But I have to disagree with her statement, as you've expressed it here -- sex in music is wonderful, if it's done well. (Unfortunately, most of the sexually inclined music one hears on the radio is rather juvenile -- "I'm gonna get you all alone, I'm gonna take off all your clothes." *Yawn*. You don't have much romance, or luck with the ladies, do you?)

Am I the only one here who doesn't have a problem with that? If George Michael can sing "I Want Your Sex", then surely Britney can whisper "I wanna have sex with you" without too many raised eyebrows. (Or is it OK for men to express their lust, but not for women? That's a rather disturbing notion, perhaps worthy of further investigation. I recommend Madonna's "Human Nature" -- an incredibly good song, even if you don't like her.)

Then again, I listen to Lords of Acid. So nothing Britney says is likely to offend me.

No, actually, my point about Britney is that she was supposedly maintaining the virgin girl image, and she's just slutty. It doesn't add up.

I must confess that I'm a bit out of the popular culture loop in many respects, so I'm not sure what "spin" Ms. Spears is currently using in her marketing of herself. But I'll take your word that she's using the madonna/whore dichotomy.

Is this any surprise at all? There was a certain quote or folklore expression I was trying to remember. A quick Google search turns up a few variations on it:

'Every mob wife is expected to be a saint in public and a whore in the bedroom.'

'Have any of you ever heard the expression "A saint in the kitchen and a whore in the bedroom?"'

The notion that she might project a public image as "pure, virginal, innocent" and yet be secretly "wanton, slutty" -- that whole package, both parts of it, is her public image. She's the girl you can take home to mother, but when you get her alone, she's a wet dream come true, and nobody knows it but you.

And again, I don't have a problem with this. I wish more people were wise enough to see it -- including, so I suspect, Britney herself. (Popular consensus, at least, seems to indicate that she's not a particularly deep thinker. Of course, that could also be a deception; but given her age, I'm more inclined to believe that someone more experienced and devious is arranging all of this "spin" for her.) But I wish her well, and I hope she avoids falling into drug addiction, poverty, and other traps that seem to be prevalent among people in her line of work.

I know I said I wouldn't post here anymore, dragonman97, but I couldn't let your post go unanswered after you took such time and effort to write something meaningful and readable So...

quoting dragonman97:

bleurgh. Hmm, this is a term I've not heard before
'bleurgh' is a very Yorkshire-ish term, I think. It means 'yuck' or 'gross' or something thereabouts.

Avril Lavigne
Yes, I've heard her music and quite like it, though I don't think I could listen for prolonged periods of time without getting the urge to be a cheerleader. She is much better than Britney, though, who I refuse to take seriously as a musician and see more as one huge marketing success.

The Yorkshire Dales
Yes, the Yorkshire Dales are very beautiful indeed, but having lived here for so long, I suppose I don't notice the beauty anymore. I was out driving in Clayton today, and it struck me that everywhere around me looks like a view on a postcard I've never seen All Creatures Great and Small though.

I met this interesting girl
You sound far more capable of social interaction than either uilleann or I. Good luck to you!

You guys make a cute couple!
Like uilleann, I have to say that I don't think we are meant to be. There are a number of practical factors prohibiting this, but also, I don't know whether our personalities gel at all, or whether we have the right chemistry. However, I can't even say how well we know each other... And I have to say that I didn't get the hot and cold comment either, though I don't think I should ask you to explain...

thanks for an interesting read uilleann and skylar

I don't know about whether this thread is just going to die, but the long drawn out, confessional, surreal posts of yore are a thing of the past, yes. I will post from time to time if there's anything to comment on (as I said before), or for some other reason (e.g. I'm largely posting this cos' I wanted to make the number of replies an even hundred before I logged off).

Fear not, though! I have no doubt Zebby will hold up the fort, as he just can't resist replying can you Zeb "I will never have a nickname as good as this one" ediah?

The Internet, Cyberspace, is a virtual place; wherever I might be in Cyberspace, I've never actually gone anywhere. At night, I'm still here, at home, on my Mac. ICQ, AIM and e-mail will always reach me, despite any absenses elsewhere. I've just not had time to go through the forums, and I don't want the effort of trying to determine all the changes manually after a partial visit has reset my last visit time, or the fact that if I did start going through them, I'd never stop.

As for this topic, I decided that I'd prove you wrong on "he just can't resist replying can you Zeb" ;) Well, I managed to prove you wrong for a few days, anyhow :)

It being the weekend, I can now take time to go right through the forums at last.
