I'm with ya on this one, Duct Tape. My hair is down to my waist, and the guys at work (mostly the horny musicians) all seem to feel the need to touch it when they pass me. It's really bizarre. My personal space isn't as sacred as others' is, especially working in an environment as touchy-feely as a theatre, but sometimes enough is enough. I mean, it's just hair!!! It's not even particularly nice hair; there's just a lot of it 'cause I tend to hide behind it and am too insecure to cut it. One particularly cranky morning I actually yanked a fistful of my hair back from the bassist and said "that's mine!" Not very articulate, but it summed up my feelings.
Bizarre.
I guess it beats having my ass grabbed.

I was wondering the same thing the other night when a guy friend of my sister's came in complaining that his girlfriend cut her hair. I asked what the thing is with guys being upset about their SO cutting her hair. My brother-in-law got upset with my sister when she cut her hair. I don't get it.

It ain't universally so. Not even half the universe. Remember the pilot woman from Northern Exposure? She was major Hubba Hubba around the world and she had a bob, I believe.

Long hair, short hair, no hair - matters not one micro-iota.

ok, ok I admit it, I am partial to long hair, I just think that it makes a woman look more beautiful. It is the way it frames her face, highlighting it and bring out her best features.
Yes, I admit it, I like running my hands through well kept hair, it feels so nice.

Is is a throwback to the cavemen when, supposedly, long hair on women was used to drag them around?
I have no idea where this comes from girls, but a lot of us males like women with long hair, it seems to be in our genes.

Long hair, works in theatre? Are you free for a date if I ever make it to NYC Jessycat?

I don't know why, but I like looking at long hair.  It's just something I'm imprinted on, I guess.  Or maybe it's another one of those signs of health and fitness which is part of the physical gestalt signalling sexiness.

I have recently grown my hair long again and I love it. 'Round these parts, people make the assumption that long hair is something only young girls have, and when you grow up (usually when you get married or have kids), it's expected that you'll cut your hair off.

Well, I've had my hair short and it may be more practical but it makes me look 10 years older and way too conservative. I think I'm going to be like my Aunt Nancy and just keep my hair long always.

I don't know if this'll help with the understanding, or if it's just a sign that I'm a pig...

I've noticed that I treat women different, depending on their hair. Two women, both about my age, and I'll talk to the one with the short hair (feathered or shoulder-length or whatever) as an equal, and I'll talk to the one with the longer hair (rib- or waist-length) as though she were several years younger than I (until I catch myself and force myself to treat her as an equal).

Women with long hair who wear it up, I tend to treat as an equal. But more than once, upon encountering a woman with her hair down, when I'd previously only seen with her hair up, I went through a brief "I know her -- who is she?" Once, I actually re-introduced myself to someone, not realizing I'd been introduced to her a week before.

edit - regardless, *touching* someone's hair (or any other direct physical contact), uninvited, is just bad.

I used to call this the Lt. Diana Prince/Wonder Woman dichotomy. I'd tie my hair back and wear my glasses, and was treated like I had a brain. When I'd let my hair loose and take off the glasses, and I felt like Wonder Woman, guys treated me like my IQ was 20 points lower than it had been 2 minutes before.

I don't get it either.

oh how I love long hair, let Me list some of the reasons why: (in no specific order)
1. It is prettier to look at.
2. It is more fun to play with.
3. It takes more effort to care for long hair and make it look good which shows Me she puts more effort into looking good.
4. You can make reigns.
5. It is easier got grab hold of.
6. It is more fun to brush and wash.

I better quit before I am forced to take a break and sacrifice more kittens >;o) I am not greedy as I also have long hair of My own for her to play with. But if you have short hair, don't despair. I would never turn someone away who has short hair, but I hope you enjoy wearing wigs once in a while........Z

Don't get too excited; I'm the girl backstage wearing boots and dirty jeans. But I'd be happy to introduce you to the belly dancers! (I still don't know how they get their ankles up next to their ears...)

Jessy, I realised that you worked backstage, not interested in the makeup and glitter, that just hides what is real.

I do a lot of theatre work in Geneva, on stage and backstage, I realised a long time ago that the women who work backstage are much more fun and down to earth than the primadonnas on stage who think they are the bees knees, despite being back row chorus.

Long hair is beautiful for a couple of reasons.

1. It shows that the woman has self controll, determination, and commitment. I mean you have to have all of those things in order to let your hair get long or else you would go ack it takes too long to clean and whack it off.

2. If it is kept nicely it show that the person is a healthy (mentaly) person that likes themself because they are obviously taking care of themself.

3. That and I will accent a woman's good features. Such as if she has great eyes it will bring them out.

All of these are great advantages to have in a woman. So that is why I like long hair. And while I am at it I will also mention that if the hair is long it should also be all natural; not permed, straightened, or collored. These just show that a woman would rather be slightly differant than she is and that is a little bit of a turn off for me.

Ah-ha!! Another clue is lurking in this thread. Long or short, many of us girls don't really care that much about our hair. The length of our hair is based on personal unimportant reasons. All you boys that see it is some sort of reflection of who we are .... well you took a wrong turn again. We wonder why it is such a big deal to guys because it reflects ... well nothing about us. Using myself and the plethora of females that are in my life or have been in my life, I find that the main reasons a girl chooses a particular "hairstyle" are:
1. Laziness - Well it works this way so I'll just keep it. This includes long hair.
2. They think the look better with that one. Pretty plain and simple.
3. It's fun. Some hairstyles are fun, sort of like doodling is fun.
4. Laziness - Well this is how it is I'll just keep it.
5. They have tried another and didn't like how they looked.
6. *It's practical! I find that most girls with long hair don't cut it because they can just throw it back into a ponytail and it is practical because if they cut it they would have to learn some new skills (in an area that seems irrelevant.) Girls with short hair often don't grow their hair out because that d#@n inbetween stage is a pain. Unless of course, if they don't like how they look.
7. It's fun. Sometimes hair is like an art project.
8. Laziness - Well this is how it is ...

Summary
Aside from girls with "punk rock" hair, who are creating (something for themselves) most girls have a certain hairstyle for boring and practical reasons.

So now ... What exactly is the deal with guys being so concerned about the length of a chicks hair?

Personally, hair length doesn't matter to me. Heh, I'm too lazy to care about my hair, so I don't really base my opinions on others'. I assume they have the same mentality as I do. Which is "Well, I don't have to look at it. You do. And I don't care if you like it."

I'm not concerned with it, it is just My preference for it to be long. It is the same with cars, I don't mind a compact, but if given a choice, I would much rather drive the Caddy. It looks better, feels better, and will always turn more heads. It is a preference, not a requirement. I don't know why I was programmed that way, so you are asking the wrong person. If you really want to know, ask the programmer. We like what we like and shouldn't have to care why......Z

I like my hair long and I like her hair long. It's just a preference though. On the importance list it is somewhere above eye color and below height and weight (neither of which should be excessive in either direction)

Personally, I think the long hair thing depends on the person. You have to have the body size and the personality to go along with the hair. If you're a larger, louder woman, then big hair suits would suit you. But a smaller, quieter woman wouldn't fit the big hair. I think it depends on the girl. I'm a small person with a small frame so big hair looks out of place which is why I have shorter hair. If a girl has a small frame and its generally petite, all you see is hair which takes away from the rest of her.

Personally, I think women should have shorter hair 'cause it accentuates the face rather than a mop of fuzz.

I keep my hair long because it's extremely curly, and if it is short, I get mushroom head. It's waist length now (when it's curly.. if I pull it straight it's just shy of being able to sit on it) and its finally heavy enough that it behaves itself most of the time. I have always wanted my hair long, and now that I"ve been growing it for 10 years it's just about the right length I also love long hair on guys.. I dont' know what it is...

Now i have long hair. It is not that long, maybe shoulder length, and for some reason girls like to touch it as well. But not just touch it, play with it. It is so un nerving. you will just be sitting in church and suddenly the girl behind you starts playing with your hair, Then she asks if it is ok. so maybe it is not just guys.

It is not just guys Nayt, girls love it too. It was one of the manin reasons I have long hair. they really love to play with it. Unfortunately, My nieces like to "practice" styling My hair. I can't count how many times I had to suffer the humiliation of one of their experiments. They are usually pretty good about putting it back to normal. One time they decided to be funny. I went through the store wondering why people were pointing. I pulled My braid around to find they had put some pink streamers in My braid. they were woven into the hair so I didn't feel them when I ran My hand over My hair. n Now I always make it a practice to chek My hair when ever they mess with it >;o) ........Z

I have long hair too, and it's not a matter of laziness either. My hair is really curly, so it takes a LOT of work to keep it from tangling into a massive dred lock.

In fact, I've been thinking about just getting dreds, that way I wouldn't have to be so damn careful about tying my hair back when I go to sleep, brushing the tangles out, conditioning the ends... bla bla bla bla bla...

And I'm a guy.

Otherwise, while I like long hair, I like medium length hair, I like short hair. I've even been very attracted to a couple of girls who have hair so short, a drill sergeant would be impressed.

Maybe it's not hair that attracts me at all, but a really nice tookus.

right, but i bet rockwolf can't pronounce the 'ch' as it's pronounced in yiddish. so it comes out tukus, which is better than if it were like 'ch' in 'chair'. btw, i have cousins that can't pronounce the yiddish 'ch' either -- instead of 'chani' they say 'connie'.

My hair is sorta long...midback when wet (ie straight), just a bit past the shoulders when dry (wavy and fluffy). No one touches it though. I think they're afraid. I cut a deal with it a few years ago. I brush and wash my hair and in return my hair lets me tie it up in a pony tail and it sometimes stays in a braid until lunchtime (instead of escaping before I even get out the door). People at work were shoicked once when I came in with it down - it sorta resembles a light brown lion's mane.

So, yes, long hair on women is most attractive to me, too. In fact, most of my female friends have waist-length-ish hair. Q: Is there a correlation? A: I don't think so, considering I met them all in random ways, and didn't seek them out based on their look.

A couple of these women have recently drastically cut their hair, one for business reasons (?) and one due to cancer. I find that I don't respond any differently to them, though in both cases, they looked better before, IMHO.

In my gig as a lighting director in a club in Boca, I've seen every hairstyle known to man, and it's interesting that the women of long hair seem to attract more attention, most likely for reasons previously mentioned in this thread.

As to guys with long hair: Get over it, it's the 21st Century already. And I know of what I speak. back in the last century, all through the 90's, up till July of '99, I had hair down to the middle of my back. I spent a lot of time and money to make sure it looked good. Then in 99, my friends convinced me to cut it short, which I did, in a kinda standard cut... did that till last summer, and got tired of scheduling the stylist and all, so I bought a razor and shaved it down to #4. In both cases, short, and shorter, people said I looked better, and younger (even though youc an now see all the grey!).

Long hair and ponytails for men is just sooo last century!!

=bd

But I would never tell someone what to do with their hair... it took me a loong time to make the initial cut decision!

my hair is extremely thick and straight and light brown/auburn, so i had it long practically all my life. in college, i got tired of only being complimented on my hair, so i cut it all off into a very cute pixie. then i didn't get any compliments, but for some reason, everyone thought i was a lesbian (which i'm not, but my roommate at the time was and no one thought she was gay!) now it's longish again (shoulder length) and my boyfriend loves it, but all i do is wear it up (soooo hot in the summer). and it's so thick i can't even use one of those giant clip things very well. i start grad school this fall and i have a feeling the long hair's days are numbered.

I have shoulder length wavy hair, and although my mother hates it, I haven't found a woman yet who says I should cut it. As fro why I like long hair on women is that first it shows that they take care of themselves. As I found when I decided to grow mine out it takes a bit more work to get ti to look good, and most people look much better when they are actually trying to look good. Also, it usually only comes in one style (although use of hair clips and bands can change the appearance it really doesn't change much) as compared to women with short hair, in which most seem to believe that the amount of hairspray or mousse doesn't matter as long as the desired style is correct, and it kinda gets annoying when they have to constantly make sure they're hair looks the same.

you know, i don't buy this "it takes longer to maintain so it shows she takes care of herself" argument. i think long hair is easier, in a way (mine, anyway). you don't have to fuss with it too much. throw it back in a pony tail if it's not behaving. i spent so much more time doing my hair when it was short. and i had to get it cut every three weeks or so to make sure it didn't look shaggy and unkempt. whereas, thanks to a good conditioner, i can go for months without getting my hair cut. and i can shower at night and sleep on it wet without too much trouble, while when it was short, i woke up looking like i'd stuck my finger in an electrical socket.

as for guys with long hair, as a general rule, it's just bad. unless you're really the crunchy granola type, it just screams metal head to me, which brings up unpleasant memories from the past. and if it's a mullet (aka hockey hair) i run screaming in the other direction. i don't date anyone with hair longer than mine, or a chest bigger than mine (fat or muscle-y, doesn't matter).
