There is no one in the world more adept at being clumsy in the most unusual way possible than I am. You may consider this a challenge to prove me wrong.

I work in a print shop. My two main duties are collating and answering the phone. Perhaps this should be in the mindnumbing jobs forum because there is nothing in the world more endless than collating 2,000 copies of a 7 page pamphlet (except maybe 5,000 copies of a 200 page book).

In my first misadventure I was answering the phone. Well, I was trying to, but something sharp scraped my ear as I brought the phone close to my head. Fortunately, I was smart enough to not put the earpiece to my ear as I usually do. There was a piece of a heavy duty staple sticking straight out of the phone. It must have been on the table where I had set the phone because I know nobody put it there. Being quite surprised I told the other person on the other end of the line to please repeat herself since I had not heard a word she'd said as I'd nearly impaled my eardrum on a staple that was stuck in the phone. She laughed at me.

In my second misadventure I learned that paper is very sharp. This has been adequately demonstrated by the countless papercuts all over my hands. However, I had no idea it could do serious damage. I had a huge stack of papers in my arms and it started to slip. I felt one lone edge cutting into the crook of my elbow. Rather than let it breech a vein, I shifted the load and it sliced into my finger rather than my arm (though I do have a nice big paper cut there, it didn't even reach the capillaries).

I think I'm typing pretty well despite the bandaid on my fingertip.

Well I know how you feel. part of my job is to pull tins (large 1.5x1.5 ft. pieces of 1/8 in tin) in and out of headgates (large concrete tubes that run through a ditch) Well 1/8 inch shouldn't cut your finger but yesterday I got one that as I grabed it sliced a 2 inch section of my thumb. It didn't realy go deep but it is one of those cuts that gapes, if you know what I mean. So I wear a band-aid to keep the wound closed.

FatGnome, you are up to date on your tetanus shots, right?

I got a papercut on my tonuge once stuffing envelopes for my dad once. It was some massive railroad abandonement filing that happened after Union Pacific and Southern Pacific merged a few years back. I almost didn't feel the cut 'cuz the envelope glue had made my tongue numb. I stole the little envelope sponge from my sister after that (she, and the rest of the family, were helping). Eating dinner was fun that night.

I spilled a carcinogenic nerve toxin all over my foot a couple weks ago. I probably shoud've been wearing closed-toe shoes but the AC doesn't work so well in this part of the building. My supervisor is still trying to figure out how I can be so useful and so dangerous to myself at the same time.

Xanthine,

I once asked my former boss if it was ok that I mouth pipet occasionally. I only do it with things like water and tris and stuff like that. I told him that I'd never do it with acrylamide or phenol. He told me that it was fine as long as I didn't get caught, then he looked at me, smiled, and said, "acrylamide tastes really bitter."

I hope the decon procedures worked, and that the carcenogenic effects are cumulative.

Maybe you should consider keeping some of that protective foot gear at the workplace? I can speak from experience that you only get one set of feet and replacements are a real pain in the ass.

Paper is deadly... I used to help out in the printing department at my highschool at lunch. We'd do off-set lamination press job, plate making, paper chopping (you wouldn't believe how sharp a blade has to be to get that nice edge on a paper (when you cutting 50,000 or so at a time). Well, I always managed to only get hurt by the paper... The reason is that you don't respect paper as a dangerous oject the way you do with the cutting and binding tools. Paper is paper, who could get hurt... Well, I'd always come home with small nicks and cuts on my hand (which was horrile ecause I play violin, and the strings on the cuts.... ).... Those were fun times though. I would love to work in a real print shop, which I suppose I could fairly easy, with Quad headquarters being here... Hmmmm....

Anyway, sorry to hear about your mishapps.
