I have a little rule...I try to avoid purchasing software from companies who are actively pursuing lawsuits against open source developers... ------------------ IP: Logged |

I have been a warcraft junky since the first one came out so I will be getting this one too. I have also played StarCraft and Diablo. So far I have liked all of Blizz's games. I have mixed feelings about the whole open source thing, being a business major and all I have a ton of respect for inteletual property rights, but I see where others are coming from as well. Roommate has it... Has some cooler advanced gameplay functions, less of a harvest gold / trees, build, kill from what I have seen. The cut scenes are really good (DivX encoded, i wonder how they are going to pull that off for the Mac OS release, since there has yet to be simple divx playback). However I am not a warcraft fan, I played WC2 for a while, but then I got sick of it, found Myth and the beauty that is true 3D RTS game, and never looked back. ------------------ IP: Logged |

My ex-roommate actually invited me to participate in the beta program for War3 (he was involved with it and Blizzard had just given permission for him to pass the beta along to a couple of friends), and I went to all the trouble of getting the 250 Mb tarball from him...but I couldn't run it! I didn't have enough disk space, and my OS was too old. And, now that I've finally remedied those problems (with an 80 Gb disk and Win98 Second Edition), the beta period is over, and the software probably won't even work anymore. IP: Logged |

I have Warcraft II and want to get WarIII, but my computer probably wouldn't run it. Oh well, that's what other geek friends with fast computers are for! IP: Logged |

Yes, that is exactly what piracy is. Purchasing a single copy of a program that is only meant to be run in one location and running it in two locations in order to avoid purchasing a second copy is the very essence of piracy. The only way to make it more of a pirate activity would be for you to chop off a leg, poke out an eye, stick a parrot on your shoulder and wave a cutlass around yelling AAAARRRRR MATEY. IP: Logged |

I always wondered if it was piracy to load software on two of my own machines if my brother plays the games on them as well? I am talking about the typical game mind you not an OS. Is it wrong for me to do that as long as I am not playing it at the same time as my brother is playing it on the other computer? I duno and realy haven't read my LA to find out. IP: Logged |

I think that's a grey area myself, but most licensing agreements specify that you agree to only load it on one computer at a time, which would technically make it piracy. My personal opinion, which I can assure you would not hold up in a court of law, is that as long as it's only being used on one computer at a time, the fact that it's installed and not being used on another computer doesn't count as piracy (and that's actually how the company I work for now sees it too... yay for liberal use licenses). It runs on my computer. Honestly that's all I care about, considering that I'm undershooting the processor speed by about 34 MHz. And it is groovy. Amazingly so. ------------------ IP: Logged |
