The cable company has finally filled the order I placed on July 9 2001 for a cable modem connection to the Internet. That does not even count how long I was on the "e-mail me when it becomes available in my area" list, before they would take my order.

I would complain that the stupid green plastic thing they put in is about 50 feet from where the easement I signed said it would be and is in the middle of my front field but I'm willing to overlook a lot to have an inexpensive always on connection with low latency.

Yikes! I guess I should stop complaining then. It only took them 4 months to turn on my DSL.

well once the dsl was available in my area we signed up. It took a few days for them to come out and turn it one. Lucky for me they turn it one before they come out and set it up. I hear that so many people have problems with their dsl provider, but I have never had any complains about mine. Ok, i have one, they will not let me access the router to configure the ports so i can use it as a firewall, but oh well, that is what my freeBSD system does now.

Cable can be a lot faster than DSL, butif the tolls on line are heavy in your area... i.e. everyone in the building is on a cable connection, there will be a lot of inconsistancy. Personally, I am looking forward to cable modem. The only downside is that some cable connections are static IPs, and there have been a few people I know who ended up unknowingly being uploaded files from some script kiddy. So, if you have a static IP, makesure to get a firewall and have a proactive AV.
