In our defense, I've noticed that people of pretty much every nationality get distressed the first few times they wind up in a place where they can't read the most of the signs or speak the language. The biggest difference is probably that those of us in the USA can live out large portions of our lives without ever being in a situation where we don't understand the language which increases the culture shock that occurs when it does happen.
