This is horrible because I was an active member of the chess team.

I would sit there and contemplate the beginning moves and then do some cute thing which would lead to an intimate conversation. The game would be abandoned and I'd have a lovely conversation with someone more geeky than I. I've never really completed a game. I've never loss or won... although have come close to it by sheer luck.

I guess that makes me a wannabe. But-- I do know how to make my own computer, design a PCR experiment and analyze forensic data. So... am I stlll a geek even though I don't know how to play chess?

Gasp!

You don't know how to play chess!!
Well that's okay, I don't play very well myself. I once read chess books but soon began getting bored of them (It's hard for me to visualize the moves [written in notaion] in my head).

The chess club I go to is now gone (not enough members) and now I just do other things.

One grandmasrter said that many people don't play chess, they just move the pieces. Well, I'm more of those "move the pieces" people.

Good luck at chess though!

I'm so happy to find that I'm not the only one in the world who can't play chess. I mean, I know how the pieces move and the general rules and all that, but I just can't get into the nuances of the game. *shrug* I much prefer Risk or Trivial Pursuit or Cribbage.

I know how to move the pieces around the board and I do a little stratagising but it is never more than 2 moves ahead. You are right I can play checkers and if I play checkers they should start a checkers club at school.

PCR? Then you can tell me why my negative control worked in spite of the fact I was very careful to keep template out of the reaction.

I'm a "move the pieces" type as well. Sure, I know the rules, but actually playing the game as it was meant to be played is beyond me.

risk is a fun game. I love playing it. the computer game is not as much fun because the computer just kicks your butt all over the place. But playing online can be fun once in awhile. I still like the old board game though. You really can't beat that.

Whenever we play Risk, it's always more "Who give in to the pressure first" than the concept of actually finishing the game. Sooner or later, one of us cracks, and the board becomes a seething mass of troops instead of the orderly game that it usually is.

That's when we claim victory.

I've only played Risk once. It was with my cousins in New Jersey who are proclaimed geniuses by my aunts and uncles.

I won.

It's amazing what you can do when you're annoyed.

Well, if it's any consolation, my neighbour's cat can beat me in 10 moves or so.

I played chess in Michigan and always won the timed games because I play it more like checkers, but never won the untimed games because I get bored.

sad that i get such satisfaction out of beating grade schoolers in a game that no one my age should still remember how to play.

And CP claims not to be a geek elsewhere in this same forum...see, CP? You can exhibit geekly qualities, if you try!

(Unless you're a ringer, and are really an Ubergeek in drag, as it were...you never know 'bout these things. This post right here that says "Erbo" on it could be one of my cats posting, for all anyone here would know . )

oops...hit Reply instead of Edit by mistake. The "tooltips" don't work under Mozilla if they just use the ALT text on the graphic. Hey, Snaggy, think you could edit the templates in UBB to use the TITLE= attribute on those images?
