I don't want to sound elitist, but I don't like the way current computer culture is.
When I see the SBC DSL commercials which have the hawiaan shirt wearing-"Bernie",
I make fun of it. When I see that AOL 7.0 commercial while watching cartoons (I'm 25 and
not ashamed of it that shows teeens dancing around and just about every current
pop-culture "effect" I can think of, I make fun of it. I am not thrilled at the fact ordinary
people are using their computers without programming them or even using the command
line interface. I feel that computers are going to be completely dumbed down and heavily
restricted because of all of this. I envision unwanted "personal assistants" and restrictions
invading everyones computer including mine becasue this. I am somewhat of a techno
luddite who sometimes wishes we could go back to the days of green-screen terminals, when
computers were not considered really "cool" by most everyone except geeks and almost
no one knew about the internzt. I hope my paranoia is unjustified.

I think there has always been a separation between pro user and consumer. The consumer will get dumber and dumber adn the pro user with get smarter and smarter. Soon the middle ground of power user will go away. I think we see that some with mac os x. The old mac os 9 power users quickly became the low end users in os x. They may be starting to change again. There will always be those apps written for the pro. like final cut pro. Then there will be the consumer version like imovie. I think it will always be that way.

I say, as long as their presence in the market keeps driving performance up and prices down, let the layman consumers buy their computers and underutilize them.

I don't really watch commercials to make decision anyway. I ask those that "know" to help Me decide what to go with. Sometimes that doesn't work either, but I feel better asking someone who has already used the prospective product......Z

eh.

sounds like you promote class distinction and "priveleged" use. I think that annoys me.

I'm also annoyed that you think an AOL commercial represents "computer culture." Unless you specifically mean non-geek culture.

Computers are transforming EVERYTHING. not just the techno-elite. knowing how to program being a pre-requisite is insane. the benefits of computing have been extended to those who don't have the technical skill so they can do their work faster and more efficiently. Even low-end users are more productive. I think it's marvelous how even idiots can use a computer now. I'm slightly irked how companies catering to low-end users try to make themselves look like the most powerful/ideal option, but when it comes down to it, I dont' even want to BEGIN to explain to my grandparents how to use ANY command line OS. I enjoy getting email from them at their AOL.com addy, and they get a lot of other work done, from family history to writing, to a hundred other tasks. It's been a blessing to them, my family and me. I'll take AOL and MS if it means that it's easier to draw closer to them.

And on that note, Swiss, I'd like to say that I couldn't be a Marxist as I wouldn't wish to join a movement that would accept me as a member.

I've just remembered my favourite Groucho-ism ... 'I could dance with you 'till the cows come home - on second thoughts I'd rather dance with the cows 'till you come home.'

Learn to live with it. There will always be the computer geeks, just as there will always be the users.
Btw, have you ever worked in tech support? Can you imagine how much more of a pain it would be if it got even more complicated?
And in any case I really don't see the point of everybody knowing how to program. Most people would have no use for it (not to mention that they wouldn't have the type of thinking required to do it).

I can just see it now. Some one calls up tech support.

"Yes, thanks for holding. what can i help you with?"

"Well, windows will not boot?"

"Did you try booting into safe mode?"

"yes, i tried that. Let me tell you what i was doing when it descided to stop working. I was doing a little programing and descided that i shoudl rewrite a few of windows features."

"oh, your a programer. How well do you know how to program?"

Oh, i just got bored about 20 min ago and descided to start with rewriting windows"

So as you can see, this would create a huge problem if everyone knew how to program.

That is very amusing.
