I've been wondering. How many lurkers are there in these forums and what makes them decide to post? Also, are the rest of us really that interesting that we have lurkers in the first place. I am proud to be a pretty dull and some of what gets talked about here is prety mundane, but we seem to have lurkers judging from posts by newbies which are smack on a particular topic. This could not be by chance - they have to have been here for a while waiting for the right thread. So, why are you standing outside the window in your raincoat with one hand in your pocket? And how long have you been at it? IP: Logged |

They're either trolls or paranoid schizophrenics who think the Man will get them if they register for anything on the internet. ------------------ IP: Logged |

As a long time lurker of many forums, I can say that I do so to make sure there will be frequent interesting topics to reply to. Yet I remain clueless as to why I registered here. IP: Logged |

quote: Are you saying that we don't have frequent interesting topics? Well, maybe we do, maybe we don't. You're point about lurking for a long time hit what I was really trying to get at with my initial question, but perhaps I did not phrase it well. IMO if you lurk in a place for a long time, it means you find it interesting. Yet, I simply don't find other peoples conversations all that interesting by themselves. It's much more fun to be in the conversation. Thus, I can't understand lurking for anything more than a few days or weeks. OTOH, I've repeatedly seen newbie's pop up on threads that they had deep opinions on. To me, it seems to be too often for chance. So I belive that some people (such as yourself) must be lurking for a long time. I just got curious about human nature and wanted to try to understand how some other people tick. IP: Logged |

I'm not so Schizophrenic as much as I am obsessed with the [potential] little blinking stars under my name. TAU, I'M COMING FOR YOU! But I read the comic every day (even though its published about every other day) for about a half year before getting into the forums. Then I realized that for a geek and a mac user, this was the place to be. I registered, and am now on my way to Blabbermouth, the next generation. IP: Logged |

what i really wonder, is why try adn catch up with Tau? what really happens when you get that many posts? Can't be anything more than a title change. having more posts than Tau really is not that motivating for me. But having more than Zorro, that is motivating. Nayt ------------------ IP: Logged |

unfortunately, I think the next one up is way too far for us to catch. It would be easier if some of the topics were more interesting, I sometimes have a hard time thinking of something to say. there are a lot of threads I have left bare.........Z IP: Logged |

[Lurker in de-lurk mode] I've been reading JoT comics for quite a while, but hadn't really realized there were forums too. When I did, I mostly scanned the "headlines" box; when I saw one asking about stuff to do in my hometown of Montreal -- well I just had to do the "neighbourly" thing (hey, us Canucks are supposed to be friendly!) and helped the guy out with a detailed write-up on what to see and do when he comes up later on this week.... So, yeah, I'd say that some of us lurkers only delurk when a topic that hits close to home comes up and we'd like to speak from a non-anonymous viewpoint. As to my other posts? Well, I was up all night anyway, so I thought I'd post my two pieces of gold-pressed latinum in (heck, Canadian pennies aren't even worth the effort...) ------------------ Proud member of ehMac, IP: Logged |

zorro, i think the next one up is steen. Maybe snaggy. We maybe able to catch them, but i doubt it. I leave a lot of theads bare also. I also find it hard to come up with things to post. We need a good debate or something like that. Nayt ------------------ IP: Logged |

Back on topic now. I post infrequently, generally when I am bored, yet should be working. As for lurking generally, I'm a wee bit shy and don't really believe that I am that interesting that you should all listen to my inane opinion. Also, no-one likes the "me too!" posts, so I only post when I have something funny (i think) to say. Also, silence is mysterious, and chicks dig that IP: Logged |

A more interesting question might be to discuss "why do people stop posting?" I used to be pretty regular, and I certainly don't like the site or the people any less, but I basically don't post any more. I think the background noise level got to be too high; I can no longer follow the interesting conversations, and many more of the conversations are uninteresting (to me anyway). C'est la vue, Ethel. Now I've gotta go back to work to earn more bucks to buy stuff from GeekCulture. I need new TubesRock tshirts... ------------------ IP: Logged |

quote: One of the reasons I've found that I might not post as often is that topics will tend to repeat themselves every once in a while. For example we've had the religion vs. science discussions a couple of times while I've been around, and there's only so many times that you can be interested in that sort of discussion. These "same topic" discussions usually start different, but they end up in the same sort of argument, so I don't tend to post to those because I feel like "I've been there done that". Sometimes they don't even start different. For example there are several "picture" threads where we're asked to post our picture. That and every once in a while you get newbies who seem to go on a posting frenzy and start new threads just for the sake of starting new threads on nothing in particular, and you learn to ignore those. (Disclamer: This is not true of all newbies, there's plenty of intelligent, nice newbies out there) ------------------ IP: Logged |
