I found this quote on MacCentral, from Apple's Senior Director of Hardware Product Marketing, Greg Joswiak:

quote:
Joswiak also takes issue with the perception -- and some published articles -- that Apple is stocking its own stores with iMacs, leaving their dealer
network with none of the new flat panel computers to sell to its customers. "The reality is, this is just not true," said Joswiak. "We've shipped less than 10 percent of the new iMacs to our own retail stores.

OK, Greg, you want to talk reality?

You say that 10% of the 125,000 shipped iMacs have gone to the Apple Stores.

10% X 125,000 = 12,500 units

How many Apple stores? Lets say 30. (The larger this number is, the fewer iMacs each store will appear to get, so overestimating the number of stores just supports his argument.)

12,500 / 30 = 416.66 Units per store

Each Apple Store has received over 400 units.

According to our records, weve received 47 of the iMac 800s, and 12 of the iMac 700/combo units.

47 + 12 = 69 Units

416 69 = 347 Units

The Apple Stores have received, on average, based on Apples own numbers, 347 more iMacs PER STORE than we have received. Thats 502.8% more iMacs than a Premiere Apple Specialist Reseller has received!

Reality, Greg?

Distorted Reality, courtesy Steve Jobs, maybe. From a certain view, yes, Apple has moved fewer iMacs to the stores than to the dealer channel, but on a per store basis, this statistic doesnt hold water.

Oh, Greg, one final question: What percentage of those 125,000 iMacs went to the Apple ONLINE Store?

I agree, and disagree...
I hope Joswiak meant "Apple Store" to include world wide on-line sales too. This would explain the discrepancy a lot better.

However, if he really meant JUST the 27 American retail stores receive 10%, then what he said could be called a deliberate lie.

What is it they say about statistics again...

Check your math, Apple Dealer.

If you got 47+12 units, that's 59, not 69.

Thus the rest would be:
416-59 = 357 more per store
357/59 = 605% more units

Which just makes this worse, if true.

=bd

Shoulda ordered before the price went up

Life is a stage, and it seems that steve and apple are good and mocking around numbers and facts over the average persons mind.
