I saw somewhere recently a proposal to create a Canadian holiday in February. The idea was to model Presidents' Day in the US and call it Prime Ministers' Day. I, for one, want no part of a celebration of corruption and ineptitude at the highest level. I propose that Canada name Valentine's Day a national holiday. Those who already enjoy Feb. 14 get a day to be with their beloved. The rest can stop whining about being alone and simply enjoy a day off with pay. Everybody wins IP: Logged |

Bregalad, I love that idea! And can you imagine the tourist boom that would result... Canada, the country where Love is a National Holiday. Pretty soon all us Canadians would be working in the tourist industry on Feb 14th. IP: Logged |

Well, the reason we have President's Day was because the birthdays of two very-admired Presidents both fell in February. They used to be celebrated as separate holidays, back in the day when holidays were celebrated by the day of the month instead of the day of the week. Somewhere along the line, someone realized Now, didn't "The Simpson's" have an episode about "Love Day"? You know, I bet the Singles' Bars could do some great promotions with a national "Valentine's Day" holiday. "Don't have a Valentine? Then on your government-sanctioned day off, come find one at The Love Shack, where there's no cover charge and all drinks are half-priced on February 14th!" ------------------ IP: Logged |

EngrBohn: Thanks for the lesson on US holidays. I was already aware of the history behind Presidents Day, but I'm sure many of the other non-Americans here weren't. I regularly shock my American friends with how much I know about their country. It must be possible to gain knowledge through osmosis or something. I'm sure proximity to the border is one of the variables involved. Canada doesn't admire or revere our Prime Ministers. Despise or tolerate are probably the appropriate terms. Trudeau seems to have been an exception, but there's no love for him in Western Canada, he gave us the middle finger (literally once, figuratively for most of 20 years). Steen: As for celebrating such fools, one is stuck in a catch-22. Who is the bigger fool, the one in office or the one who voted for him/her? IP: Logged |

Holy crap! I just noticed this: - EngrBohn - Okay, for the record, I'm referring to George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Not GW Bush and Al Gore.

EngrBohn, never crossed my mind that you were talking about anyone else. I mean if you saw what some of the satirical programs over here thought about Dubya, it would not have crossed yours either. Of course, twenty or thirty years down the line, one might have to think twice. IP: Logged |

quote: Do you get That's My Bush? I've watched an episode, and it's actually not half bad. Sort of "Married With Children" meets "The West Wing." They're showing several episodes this week, IIRC, in "honor" of Presidents' Day. IP: Logged |
