That's two World Cup favorites eliminated in the first round: France and Argentina. Italy faces elimination against Mexico tomorrow and Portugal has to win on Thursday or they'll be on the next flight back to a country where politics is the only thing more talked about than football. This really has been the Weird Cup. The only undefeated federation at this point in the tournament is CONCACAF (North and Central America), the group other federations normally use to wipe their feet. Much to the surprise of many the host countries, Japan and Korea, are also well placed to make it to the next round. Scanadanavia is making a fantastic showing at this year's cup. Yesterday ze Danes outplayed Zidane to win Group A and today the Swedes held off a late charge by the Argentines to grab first place in Group F. Now I need to get some sleep. This staying up until 1:30am (or 2:00 as it is right now) every night is really starting to wear me out. My boss will not be amused if I fall asleep at work tomorrow. IP: Logged |

No, no! Spungo clearly didn't listen to Radio 1 yesterday (as I did due to having to drive from Crewe to Bedfordshire and back) and hence missed the exposition of the uncanny parallels between 1966 and 2002 which mean England are clearly destined to win! Parallels between 1966 and 2002: - Previous champions knocked out in the first round QED! IP: Logged |

quote: Unfortunately I didn't see that match. Reports from the bleary eyed crazies who are staying up all night to watch all the matches live reported that result thusly: Argentina 0 Referee 1. I'm sure you disagree. Very few people in Canada care that the World Cup is taking place. Interest seems to exist only in immigrant families with strong ties to football crazy nations like Italy or Portugal. Most of the recent immigrants to this city are from China or India, two countries not noted for their football sides. The television audience here seems to prefer Canadian and American sports and while many children play soccer in my part of the country, few adults do. Softball, volleyball, basketball, ultimate, alpine and nordic snow sports, and of course hockey rate above soccer in participation. You might find it strange in a cold nation like Canada, but amateur soccer is a winter sport in Vancouver. That fact alone probably explains the lack of teenagers and young adults playing the sport. another parallel between 1966 and 2002 (also from Radio 1, nekomatic): 2+0+0+2 = 4 it's spooky, isn't it? now England will definitely win... it's written in the stars! did anyone see England v. Nigeria, I can only say ech! and indeed ech! (especially after that triumphant Beckham penalty vs. Argentina (about time too!) does anyone else think it's sort of racist to call them The Argies? it's a bit like saying The Chinks or The Pakis. or is that me being overly politically correct again? Towards the end the game naturally became very dull - the Nigerians were pleased not to lose all three, and England just wanted the single point. Yes, very much so. It started during the Falklands War - the less cerebral of the newpapers here used that term. Not to be condoned. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I'd be tempted to drop Heskey - as he's not threatening the goal enough. I'd start with Vassell or Fowler, with Sheringham as a possible sub. The Danish defence are rather big, you see - I don't think Heskey's muscle will work. Vassell's pace might, though. ------------------ IP: Logged |

England have some Wonderboys (Beckham, obviously, Owen, and i would say Butt and Scholes). But Denmark are more of a team, more cohesive. And I think that that could be what brings us down... maybe I was a bit hasty in my earlier prediction. I hope not, though. By the way, was it Bregalad who said that the only people who are interested in football in Canada are the ones from footballing nations? I'm from Near Asia, for goodness sake! A lot of it is just about getting a mood, wanting to support your fellow humans. IP: Logged |

I must admit, given what the US has done to the "English" language, and seeing that they've stolen our name "football" for a game of their own, it's nice to see them returning to their roots and joining in with a game of whence some of their people came. Puts the "World" fully into World Cup. I never actually realised they'd even tried to enter the World Cup in the past (apparently, they try every year, or some such); I'd assumed that this was their first time in it. Even so, just because the US always has to be bigger and better, I don't want them to win this time around (can't be the best at everything) =) Hrm... what our are changes against Brazil, though... we beat Argentina, so can we really pull together and sort out Brazil too? I'd love to think so, but my sister remains healthily sceptical on the matter. We'll see, time will tell. - Uilleann IP: Logged |

Yes I am just now getting back to post here but there are some of us Yanks that still follow soxre =-) Well I didn't expect us to get to the quarters that is for sure. I didn't expect to get past the second round to tell the truth and beating Mexico is something we have to do on a regular basis and so that actualy didn't suprise me. I only watched the US-Germany game for a little while as to calm my little brother I had to watch a Bugs Life to keep him from screaming while my parents slept. I was hoping we would win that one because we had a bratty exchange student here this year telling us how the US is only bigger and whatever because we stole all of Germanys technology. My answer is Gates stole the windows from Germany? Dang no wonder it never works. =-) I was kidding but he didn't think so. IP: Logged |
