Yeah one of my favorite numbers 111 and this is post 111. I am officialy a geek. I like 111 because when I write it it looks the same forwards, backwards, and upside down and upside down and backwards. I love palendromes so that is why this will be one of my favorite years 2002 looks the same whether the numbers are put in the order 2002 or 2002. IP: Logged |

I can't settle on one favorite number, so I'll list a few. 75 - Steve Millen's car number when he raced the Nissan IMSA GT 300ZX to overall wins at Daytona and Sebring, and a class win (5th overall) at the 24 hours at Le Mans in 1994. 75, not coincidentally, is the number I run on my own 300ZX at autocrosses. 240, 260, 280, and 300 - The Nissan Z car models. 355, 360, 550, 560 - Ferraris. 'Nuff said. 917 - The Porsche that killed of Can-Am racing because nobody wanted to run against it. 6061 - Most aluminum bike frames get made out of 6061 aluminum because it's workable and weldable. Hand-finished welds, hourglass shaped seat stays, and ovalized tubes are just damn sexy on a bike. IP: Logged |

8.314510 is nice. Very very nice. Or maybe I'm just saying taht because I passed out doing pchem again... Other favorites are 12, 16, 15,1, and 130 (molecular weights of C, monoatomic O, N, H and xanthine respectively). I also like 4 and 20 but my all time favorite has to be 13. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I suspect it's accidental that we start counting at zero. You'll notice the languages that pre-date C start their array indexing at one. But it made the implementation of C ("assembly code with a thin veneer of safety glass, with enough abstraction to be classified as a high-level language") much easier to start counting at zero, due to the equivalency of pointers and arrays. And then there are languages like Ada where you can start counting wherever you feel like it (when declaring the array, you can tell the compiler that the legal indices to the array are 42..59, for example). It's only the popularity of C and C-derived languages that's made zero-counting commonplace. ------------------ IP: Logged |

77 is my favorite number and favorite band. (Has nothing to do with what Zorro said.) I also really like infinity because it makes calculus bearable. IP: Logged |

- Super Flippy - I also really like infinity because it makes calculus bearable. Then you'll *love* Mathematical Analysis, which introduces different levels of infinity (granted, at least two levels -- Aleph_0 & Aleph_1 are included in Theory of Computation, but I think I'd have had a harder time dealing with it if I hadn't had Mathematical Analysis first). And where you learn to do some of the funky stuff with them. For those who don't know what I'm talking about, there are different levels of infinity, denoted by the Hebrew character Aleph and a subscript. Strictly speaking, these aren't numbers, but rather cardinalities. Aleph_0 is the size of a countably infinite set (e.g., the set of integers). Let S be a set with cardinality Aleph_0. Then the power set of S is of cardinality Aleph_1, and this is the first "uncountably infinite" (or just "uncountable") cardinality (the set of real numbers is of size Aleph_1). If T is a set of cardinality Aleph_1, then the power set of T is of cardinality Aleph_2. The remaining levels of infinity are similarly defined. Personally, I've never used anything beyond Aleph_1. Unless you're planning to do graduate work in mathematics or computer science, you probably won't even see these, much less use them.

42 is cool, so PI and 0. Suprised e wasn't mentioned sooner, and the square root of 2 has to be on the list. But 9, 7 and 13 are the coolest to me. First off 7 eight 9. Second, there is the 9 wizard. Third, 7 is going to heaven and don't for dice games. Now, the lady of the hour #13. I like it because even today there are a lot of people who will not work on floor 13. People freak out about Friday 13, and while I don't see anyother reason (mathmatically speaking) to adore 13.... I love it just to spite those that hate it. <edit type =ADD> IP: Logged |
