Yay!! Hurray!

I just heard that the IOC awarded a gold to Jamie Sale and David Pelletier.

They held a press conference, and a reporter asked if they'd gotten attached to their silver. David said, "Yeh, and we're hoping to get the bronze too so we can have the whole collection.

I am now officially a happy camper.

Maybe I'm just bitter BUT

If the original ruling was bad, why do the Russians still have their gold?

If the original ruling was not bad, why do teh Canadians have one now?

This is reason #452 that I don't enjoy the Olympics (the first 451 have to do with them disrupting my life, especially this year when they're in town, or the fact that I dont' enjoy watching sports). This is clearly a political move. As I said, I don't enjoy sports, but it seems to me if you have a contest, someone wins. True, if it's judged, perhaps the judgement is bad, so I don't resent the fact that there was controversy. But a PC "everyone wins" sort of approach annoys me. How can I get enthusiastic about the "unity" and the "excellence" if you get first prize simply because some one not competing was corrupt? That doesn't show any excellence or unity. It shows bad judgement and division.

Incidentally, I didn't see the Russian performance, only the Canadian one. However, I was very impressed with that performance, and I really think that team deserved recognition (although they looked very, very tired as they did it).

Yay, this ends days of debate of what would happen. I am so happy. I stil think they shoudl have taken the gold medals away from the russians, but you can't win all your battles.

And you were absolutely right when you said it was a frog commie plot. The plot was not some side deal the judges made, but an agreement between the French and Russian skating federations.

I can't help but think that the french judge has been totally scape-goated. Over the past 40 years, there must have been dozens of judges who helped to perpetrate voting frauds (most of them in the dance competition block-voting like that which we are currently seeing) and this is the first judge who had a crisis of confidence over it. I can't help thinking that she's probably a well-meaning and generally honest person who just screwed up big-time. Anyway, there's lots of other people here who should be at fault.

That's true, but someone had to be the first judge to really be punished for doing such things. As far as I've heard, the only punishment is that she's permanently barred from judging competitions, which I can't argue against. If she's that easily influenced by pressure from others, she shouldn't be in position that exposes her to such pressure.

The thing that gets me upset about the French judge is that she's being punished when the two skating federations aren't.

Seems to me this sport will never clean up until the national skating federations stand to be suspended, not just individual judges. and

I heard on NBC that the polish judge is married to the head of the russian figure skating assoc. Now would that not cause a conflict of interest?

You may be right, but this article gives some welcome news. They're scrapping the current system and implementing a new-ish one that sounds like it would significantly reduce the chances for unfair voting.

it is not as bad as it sounds, first the polish judge has to figure out which sport is being judged. If they are found to be biased, then put them in a round room and tell them to stand in the corner >;o) (I am 1/4 polish so don't get all pc on Me, I will make fun of My heritage if I feel like it. Anyone who is non-pole can kiss My Dupa if they don't like it) >;o) .........Z

Another shining example of the atheletocentrism in human society. Didn't anything roughly important happen in the world the 5 days in a row this little debacle was 'front-page news?'

Ye-e-e-h. How about Enron, Campaign Finance Reform, the fighting in Afghanistan?

Point is, this is a place to get away from all that crap, and concentrate on vegging out. [Too bad there's not a smiley for 'oxymoron.']
