Apple anounces its new release to quicktime that includes MPEG-4 compression and encoding capabilities. They also anounced some additional software that will allow users to both stream video and music over the internet more easily. The only thing holding up this beta is the people who own MPEG-4, they want loyalties for both compressing and transmitting. Damn greedy people! Any other new tech stuff you guys hear about and want to talk about? Aaron IP: Logged |

QuickTime 6 come up so soon? Geez, it's waste my time for download to upgrade my QuickTime 5. Apple, can't you push more time like I would ask for 1 more years. So, what's great about QT6? IP: Logged |

They said at the keynote yeatserday that they have a version of QT 6 Preveiw ready to ship. Apple is "delaying" the release of QuickTime 6 until MPEG-LA (the folks who hold most of the MPEG-4 patents) revises its licensing terms to allow broadcasters to offer up MPEG-4 content royalty-free. heck, for convenience's sake, apple even gave out the address where well-reasoned requests may be sent: [email protected]. Ugh...if Apple really, truly is taking on MPEG-LA, we could be in for a VERY long haul to QuickTime 6... ------------------ IP: Logged |

Techno? Like Lords of Acid? (Why do I have this mental image of Nayt hearing Lords of Acid and immediately clapping his hands over his ears, and dropping to his knees in prayer? ) IP: Logged |

What's different about QT support Flash if they have flashplayer/shockwave? IP: Logged |

It's about consolidating playback apps, most likely. Of course the Flash support that's in QT 5 is kind of lacking...I hope they improve it in 6. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Low down on MPEGLA. It is the same group of people that runs 1394LA (the firewire people). Like EXACT same. Apple should be able to push them a bit. Apple has invested lots of time/money into MPEG-4 (it is the equivalent of a file format specification, you can compress with a MPEG-4 Codec, which practically right now is just Divx, and store it in a file with audio compressed differently). And MPEG-4 is based heavily on the quicktime format, they look almost identical. But Apple is not one of the license owners, they GAVE a lot of their stuff to the group, and apple is trying to be able to give away Darwin Streaming Server (another Killer App for OS X Server / Quicktime in general, to get people to stop using streaming formats that don't play on the mac very well, IE windows media and real). Having to include a system that charges based on USAGE would destroy it. So apple is being really smart. It is bringing to light MPEGLA as a group that is stopping users from getting Quicktime 6, it will now all of a sudden have to bear the brunt of the collective group of pissed of people. Because apple now has thousands of other people pushing on MPEGLA, it should bring quicktime 6 out faster than if apple didn't say anything at all. Steve Jobs is s-m-r-t. ------------------ IP: Logged |
