It's the manufactured nature of this "pop" music that offends me the most. Music is supposed to be an expression of someone's emotions or viewpoint. It's supposed to be entertainment, too, but its origins are in self-expression. Songs were sung as a way of remembering stuff (hymns), preserving oral culture (folk), etc. Britney Spears et al sing for MONEY. Only. BS herself has been in show business for years. This musical career is simply another aspect of that business. Rest assured, after her songs become passe, she'll make the leap to acting, probably in some steamy thriller wherein she bares her top as an effort to prove she's "serious." Look at Molly Ringwald. She took her top off in some direct-to-video trash a few years ago. The best music in the world was created by people to whom payment was secondary. IMHO, the opposite is also true, that the worst music is made by people to whom payment is primary. Sure, you should be compensated for your work, but only if it deserves it first. IP: Logged |

quote: Actually, she's already starting her movie career according to this article http://entertainment.msn.com/news/eonline/0111/bspears.asp . And she's going to play the "good" girl who doesn't bare her top. IP: Logged |

Yeah, but she's still got her squeaky-clean image to maintain. If the acting gig flops, her "music" is still commercially viable. I was imagining a future wherein her singing career has tanked and she must resort to the aforementioned sleaze as a last-ditch effort to stay viable. And no, I don't remember the name of that Molly Ringwald movie, but go to www.imdb.com and search for her name. I'm sure you'll find it. IP: Logged |
