While watching the webcam at work today, the caption mentioned that the cat had "mittenpaws". I asked Snaggy what that meant, and he replied that it was a genetic mutation and he would try to show them on camera. Soon after, I was forced to return to productive work and missed it. Question(s): Did anyone manage to get a look? Did anyone happen to get a picture they could post? IP: Logged |

We didn't get a really good shot of his paws, but I promise to get one tomorrow and post it. They are freaky! Update... pictures are below! ...but the kittie is such a sweetheart. IP: Logged |

From the latest pictures on the NitroShagCam it seems that 'Mittenkitten' also has the Mutant power to turn itself invisible. (picture the basket with no kitten inside) IP: Logged |

So you're saying Nitrokitty has the opposite problem of a polydactyl kitty? Or are they just painted cutely? Catproof is an oxymoron, childproof nearly so. IP: Logged |

Here you go, pictures of the Abandoned Mutant Mittenkitten! A good shot of the mitten paws. Note the non-mutant Snaggy shoe for scale. A close up of paw. It's like an additional mini paw is growing there. A shot of the full mittenkitten, attempting to hide among Escher-like patterns. I believe his mutant power is friendliness, he is one friendly kitty! IP: Logged |

OK So it's just a "regular" polydactyl cat. This is actually a rather common condition in cats. It's a bummer when you get them declawed, because most vets charge by the toe! Here. Try this or better still, this Where are we going? Why am I in this handbasket? IP: Logged |

Ive Never had a multi-toed cat myself, although I have seen quite a few. A very cute NitroKitty (mittenkitten) then again, I am a sucker for cats in general. Off to find pumpkin or booger, the schools barn cats (They want to give them to me as a graduation present). ------------------ IP: Logged |

Polydactyl cats. I've had dozens of them. Almost literally. My favorite cats' last litter was composed of 9 polydactly kittens. Quite a site to see them bat at each other. One of them actually had 2 complete feet, including tendons up to the knee, on both front legs. We named him Rocky. A dairy farmer friend grabbed them all for barn cats hoping they would breed true. I last track thru the years and never found out if they did. The scary thing about the incident was that my wife and cat were pregnant at the same time. The cat delivered first. When my daughter was born my wife's first question was "How many fingers does she have?" When I answered, quite correctly, "At least six" she nearly fainted. IP: Logged |

Those toes are proprietary! I think in Key West, FL there are lots of these cats because they are all the descendants of Hemingway's cats which had that same condition. Its pretty cool. IP: Logged |

quote: 'Polydactyl' is a dominant trait if I recall my lessons correctly, so barring a stunning series of meiotic non-disjunction events, you should see at least half the kids being polydactyl if there are no other extenuating circumstances. (ie. two pol;ydactyl parents might produce offspring in skewed ratios, 3:1 or 2:1 - depends if polydactyl is lethal when doubled up.) And that concludes today's lesson from your friendly genetics geek. IP: Logged |

My cat Tiger has opposable thumbs on his front paws. Otherwise, he's a pretty normal tom. Peter IP: Logged |
