Do You See The Benzine Rings?

Tune from "Do You Hear The People Singe" from Les Miserables

Do you see the benzene rings
Forming a dodgy azo dye?
It's the reaction of a phenol
Who will not esterify,
When your carbon-carbon bonds
Are all sp2 hybridised,
There's a pi-bond of electrons
That's delocalised!!

Will the toluene nitrate?
Who will explode with TNT?
Through polycarbonate
Is there a world that you can see??
Then join the pi-bond with its high electron density!!

Do you see the benzene rings,
Lost in a world of Bakelite?
It's a co-polymer of phenol
Bonded to formaldehyde;
For the aromatic groups
There is a ring that's stabilised,
Even the aryl chlorides will
Not be hydrolysed!

They're in acids stuck to antifreeze
In chains of Terylene,
They're in aspirin and Dettol -
They're in Oil of Wintergreen,
They're in methyl orange, and Kevlar, and phenolphthalein!!

Will the toluene nitrate?
Who will explode with TNT?
Through all the polycarbonate
Is there a world that you can see?
Do you see the benzene rings,
With all their carbons hybridised,
It is the pi-electron thing
That's delocalised!!

Will the toluene nitrate?
Who will explode with TNT??
Through all the polycarbonate
Is there a world that you can see?
Do you see the benzene rings,
With all their carbons hybridised?
It is the pi-electron thing
That's delocalised!

Aa-aa-aahh - de-loc-al-iiiiiiiised!!!

Blasphemy! Sacrilege!

Please keep in mind the oh-so-rare occurence of the "theatre geek" (technical of course) on the board. Any others?

Seems a silly thing to whine about. Among other things, I'm a comic book fan, but I still laugh at funny Superman/X-Men/et al jokes. Same goes for Star Wars and my music...

Of course, not being a chemistry buff, I don't think I even know what Benzine rings are....

Well, for one thing the correct spelling is benzene. Six carbon atoms, each with one hydrogen attached, in a ring. Double bonds between every other carbon. The thing about these double bonds is the electron in them are actually shared ammong all six carbons, giving benzene some unique properties (being a carcinogen is one of them). One or more of the hydrogens on a benzene ring can be substituted with some other functional group, such as an alcohol or amine (ammonia minus a hydrogen). This changes the properties of benzene considerably, as the song shows.
Okay, enough chemistry for one day.
I found the song to be very amusing.
