![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I don't have os X... but one thing does comes to mind... is the connection to the internet a dial-up? If so, it could that you lose the connection during the night, and AIM forces a new connection since it is part of the log-on... My ideas would poke around AIM and set it disconnect after T min/hrs inactive. Just a thought. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I used to have something similar happen to me with my Linux box years ago. Occasionally, I would come back and I would be at a login screen. I could tell fromt the uptime that the machine wasn't rebooting. I finally found out that there the 3-D OpenGL screen savers were capable of crashing my X (window system) server. The display manager would detect that X server had stopped, and restart it, bringing up the login box. These days, I don't have any trouble with any screensavers. First, a lot of bugfixes cleared that up, and I don't run them anymore because that would take CPU cycles from the GeekCulture Team RC5 effort. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Do you have OS X set to autologin when you boot? If so, maybe the machine is restarting for whatever reason. A workaround (read: not really a fix) would be to turn off autologin (in the Users System Preference Panel, I think...no...Login maybe?, well, it's in one of those two). Just grabbing at straws here. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Another possible hint: is software update set on automatic at a 'middle of the night' time, every day? Lot of time the updates requires a reboot. And that's the only way I reboot. In any way, it looks like a automatic thing. Take a good look through your system preference. Keep us informed of your progress! IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() i do have software update set on automatic, but should only go once a week, and it asks me what i want to install, but i'll try turning that off tonight i do have automatic login turned on. i'll check my uptime tomarow to see if its restarting or just quiting window manager (that has the same effect as loging back in) i havn't installed any other screensaves and i don't think i even have the standard screen savers turned on thanks for all the help i'll update you tomarow. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() There is a daily script that runs at 3:15 a.m. perhaps something related to that script is going wrong. I manage 4 X-servers at my primary worksite, and I have helped set up another 12 or so X based servers. I can say that on my servers, and X client machines I have set up, I have never seen them auto-reboot overnight without a crash. If you really want to dig, look at the /var/log/system.log file and see what it says in there. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Don't suppose it could be brief power outages? Of course, any sort of reboot would cause the system startup sound to play, unless it just logged out and then in. It is possible that the sound could play and not wake you up, but put your brain on the alert for further sounds. Then when people IM you, these sounds are picked up. Anyway, why not press the mute button before going to bed? IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() You might want to try turning on "Log crash information" in the Console.app Preferences. I don't expect the information in the reports will be helpful to someone who is not familar with mach and bsd programming, but if you open up the ~/Library/Logs/ directory and sort by date you will at least know what the last application that crashed was. Setting AIM so that it does not login automatically would be my immediate workaround though. I find that feature annoying anyway. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() quote: Actually, I would think that just being a geek and an AIM user, your ears would be CONSTANTLY on alert for the AIM :BLING: sound. I know that I can hear mine all the way in the kitchen even with my bedroom door closed (that's a pretty long way). IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() i'm sorry, i meant what model of macintosh are you running 10.1.3 on? it quite possibly could have something to do with a particular model and 10.1.3. is your system set up to put itself to sleep? or are you running classic? as someone mentioned, enabling the crash logging might help out a bit. otherwise the system logs aren't likely to be of much help - on my machine, (pb g4) they don't even keep track of system startup/shutdown times... *sigh*
