Just finished installing Jaguar on my production TiBook 500, after a short test period on my old Lombard 333... I'll tell you... it made the Lombard SING! I thought it was faster, but wasn't sure. Now, on the TiBook (500/30GB/768RAM), it frelling ROCKS! It's noticably faster, and even fixed some of the glitches in my old system, which had been hobbling along as a result of starting from a 10.1 Beta 64=>Golden Master original install. File Sharing works again! WOOHOO! But that's not an overall thing that 10.2 brings, it's just a fix that showed up for me. It's hard to point to a particular bit of new hotness... although I went through every single System Pref Pane, and found lots of cool stuff... "Warn before launching Classic." WOW! Energy Saver settings for AC and Battery! YAY! I can't even tell yet how cool it is to have a system-level MIDI driver interface setup. All I can tell you is it's worth whatever Apple wants for it. If they weren't so invested in calling it OS X, they should have called it OS 11! =bd They do call it OS X version 2... IP: Logged |

not to be confused with Mac OS X Server Version 2 btw, 10.2 and X.2 are aparently both politically correct, though i'm still wondering how you pronouce the latter, and I think I prefer X.II ------------------ IP: Logged |

Either way it is pronounced "ten point two". "oh esse ex" is the not apple approved. Congrats on getting it early, Bill! Mine won't likely be showing up until the weekend. Or maybe monday or tuesday IP: Logged |

Heh... working for an Apple dealer has to have SOME advantages, now, doesn't it? Actually, I could have installed it 2 weeks ago, but I was waiting for 2 things, 1) to be sure that 6C115 is in fact the GM (it is), and 2) I had a LOT of installation problems on my Lombard, which turned out to be due to a bad set of CDs... Obviously, I didn't want to subject my production machine to that! But the Upgrade (as opposed to clean install - an option once again available in 10.2) went really well. If anyone gets their 10.2, you can iChat me at "DigitalBill"! =bd YAY! Spring-loaded folders! IP: Logged |

The OS9 clean install, if I remember correctly, trashes the current System folder and starts it off fresh. The OSX version is probably like this, although whether it cleans out /Library, /usr, /etc, I don't know. It should leave your home directory and applications alone, I think. Otherwise, the clean install option wouldn't be any different than the option to format the drive that was already available. IP: Logged |

quote: Nick, You have several options now... 1) Upgrade Install... This is what I did on my TiBook that was running 10.1.5... works great. 2) New Install... for a drive or partition that's never had X on it... did this on the Lombard and it worked fine. (Once I got good installer disks!) 3) Clean Install... Haven't tried this yet, though I may on my roommate's iBook... it will offer you the option of creating an archive of your old system. I'm not sure if this archive is a gzip, tar, or just a folder... The install is prettymuch like 10.1, whether you upgrade or full install... though I didn't notice the "Sofa Rockers" by Kruder & Dorfmeister behind it this time... but maybe my speakers were off. Compatibility seems pretty good so far, and updates are coming out fast and furious for our fave utilities... M$ Apps seem OK, though Entourage seems a little more pokey than it should be... maybe a good time to switch to Mail.app. I'll try to post a full review later this week. Or just cobble together these posts into some semblance of order. =bd 150 new features, incuding longer short names! IP: Logged |

quote: Yeah, I'm getting that impression, seeing as entourage just deleted all 800 of my contacts. and proceeded to erase them from my Visor Edge. no wonder they pulled the sync conduit. luckily I had an old backup of my contacts on my PowerBook from June. (thank god for a slow summer month.) IP: Logged |

Is a Developer Tools CD included? Or on the Xtra Apps CD? Or is it download only? Gotta have my dev tools. IP: Logged |

And now I'm Jag-wired! So far my favorite thing is that the Software Base Station is back, although they don't call it that anymore. Very nice. Now I have to poke at things for a few hours. Sort of like a cat kneading pillows before it lays down, I suppose. IP: Logged |
