Today was a very hard day for me and it is still confussing me. Alright heres the deal I have two TBooks the twins: Jessica (500MHZ) & Erin (667MHZ) and Sarah (14" iBook). So recently I was hanging out at the NYC Apple Market Center and one of the local emp's made a comment about me having more systems then the Market Center and I should consider letting go of what I didn't need. So I thought about it and decided they where right I did only need 1 portable machine the other two never really got used anyways.

So today was the big day! My Jessica was handed over to my soon to be former roommate and Sarah is going to my new girlfriend (BTW: for curious parties geek geek relationship is going well you where all right).

But never before have I parted ways with any of my systems before and today losing Jessica felt like I was losing a piece of me then my roommate went and whipped her clean, everything gone in the blink of the eye. It was weird i was reading a post somewhere about having to pry a mac from my cold dead hands. And all i could think about was my roommate having to take jessica from my hands and me not willingly letting her go.

I know it sounds a bit twisted but hey I spent alot of time with her. For 15 months she went everywhere with me and was always within eye sight and now shes gone forever.

Then friday I lose Sarah to its going to be a long week.

As long as you are sure that they are going to good homes and will be well looked after, they you should have no worry.

Parting with machines that have served you well is always hard to do, I am one to talk, I still have all my old machines, despite some of them not working.

Think of it not as losing an iBook, but gaining another network node
(my previous 4 Macs have all been passed on to my girlfriend. It's a handy excuse when you feel the urge for a new machine )

You know, I have been thinking about looking around for a mac to play with, since I've never used one...

I feel your pain... I've had many of those instances before in my life and in the end, I decided not to pass my systems on to other users... Well, almost all of them. My Centris 650 is in permanent retirement in her box. My G3 desktop is still being used in this very household by all who surf the web. However, the first G4 I had (400 hmz) gave me a great 2 years of use. That was until early this year I saw an 800 mhz Quicksilver G4 on sale for $1000! Well, I couldn't bear Kimberly (My older G4 named after my GF) go without being used, so I passed it on to the only person I knew would use it well... The REAL Kimberly. Now my GF uses the computer and I'm happy using my new machine. *sniff*... If I had any tears to shed, I would cry...

Wow, and I thought i was a pack rat.....

But then again, I don't have any computers that would be worth giving away, except for my main one. I still have / use my first geek computer (computer from when I became one with my geekiness) because it is a laptop and I was able to use it thoroughly for the last 2 years now.

Deus, Pismo 400mhz, 1 gig o ram. It's a beast.

Of course I would have trouble parting with it now, possibly do a long term loan to a friend, etc. If i got a replacement (I have found having a redundent laptop isn't at all effecient).

Now parting with my PCs is really easy, since well, they are PCs and i've gotten almost all of them for free / little expense. (Like by pentium 75 laptop i got when my friend found it cleaning out his room). I don't have many fond memories of them, since they are just servers and work.

But I am getting a powermac 9500 to add to my mix, so who knows, maybe I'll find myself attached to yet another mac.

Hope you're parting ways with your powerbooks hasn't been too traumatic.

I suppose I should confess to being a bit of a squirrel, too, though it be just from total laziness :)

My first machine was a BBC Micro*, in about 1989. At the time I was most, most disappointed because I wanted something fancy like an Amiga. However, its hard-core nature was a valuable geek training tool, and it has some great games, too.

It lasted three years before I realised that it was way outdated, and I moved on to a 486 and Windows (I still like Win 3.11). I sold all my BBC stuff to my cousin, with little regret; the funny thing was, I bought it back off him about seven years later :) It was nice to have it back, and while I had it, I finally got the chance to replace the video chip which had never worked right in all those ten years (common fault). It was then sold again, to a new happy home :)

What was much more sad was that a little bit before that, someone had given me some spare BBCs, and one had become my main machine and I'd got back into my old 8-bit 2 MHz ways. And then, when fitting a software chip to an expansion board one day, I used too much force and cracked one of the boards. The machine survived, but was too damaged to be worth using. That was my prize machine *sniff*, my Issue 7 BBC model B :(

However, I did have more to use.

I still have two working spare ones, and I'd be glad to give those (and some of my spare Macs (that's another story altogether)(LC/LCIII/Classic)) away to a happy home, but I'm too damned lazy to proactively find them happy homes, so at home they remain, unused, unappreciated and lonely :( There's even a Psion IILZ for anyone who wants that. Yes, I'm sentimental about stuff, but I much prefer my stuff to have a happy home than lament at home in my room in a pile. Go happy endings!

Now, as for my main machine now, my old StarMax clone, damned if I'm gonna get rid of that... :)

Wow, I get all gushy inside when I look at all the love! It makes me think of my collection of Macs. I still have my first computer, a circa 1988 Mac II, but she doesn't boot anymore, even with a new power supply; ::sigh:: time to part 'er out I guess. I acutllay SOLD my Performa 6200CD so I could get enough money for my refurbished PowerBook G3 Wallstreet, but I still get visitation rights. I still have my PowerBook G3 (Lone Wolf), which I used as my main system for a couple of years. During those years I amassed a IIci, a IIfx, two LC IIIs, another Mac II (with an '030 upgrade!), a SE, a Classic, an LC630 DOS Compatable, a Quadra 700, a Performa 6400, and a PowerMac 8500. The Classic has a nice cozy home in ma's kitchen where it runs a little HyperCard-based recipe program I wrote for it. The SE, II, IIci, LC IIIs, IIfx, LC630, and Quadra all sadly sit in a closet, I just don't have time to beef them all up on System 7.5.3 and assign them all jobs. The PowerMac 8500 is actually one of the coolest machines I own: it is a file server, it's my scanning station, my burning station, and my audio editing station (it'd do video too, but I can't afford a fast enough hard drive), it plays my MP3's through my stereo with SoundJam which is contoled by AppleScript via my other machines, it bridges my EtherTalk network with my LocalTalk network, it provides my LAN with a connection to the aether of the 'net, and it still finds time to crunch a RC5 packet or two! (Wow, I never actually figured out ALL that that machine does, holy cow!) The Performa 6400 is basically just a TV on steroids. And then Mom is using a PowerMac 5200/75 LC to surf the web and play her games.

Then there's my main system, the reason that my PowerBook got demoted to "just a laptop." X-Box is a Beige G3 233 with 512K L2 backside cache, 224MB of RAM and a 4GB hard drive. I overclocked her to 292 and she seems to run fine there. She runs MacOS X and only MacOS X, I have other machines to do my OS 9 work for me. In the few short months I've had her, I've grown to love her (not that I wouldn't make a new iMac my main system, if I so happen to fall into one).

Am I a Mac junkie? Of course, that's why they call me the MacMan!
