I guess the Mac folks don't as today's JoT implies, but being the PC/Linux guy that I am, I like John C. Dvorak, and his cynical attitude - it gives him a more accurate view of things, rather than being a cheerleader for it all. I read the article presented as an example, and agreed with it. [I noticed crazyarlo's already responded to it, so maybe I should turn my flame shield on.] Those ads are stupid, and are probably not going to win anyone over. The underdog (Apple) should not be mudslinging, it does not help their image. Saying they used to have a "horrid little PC" does not necessarily want me to buy a <sarcasm>big beautiful Mac</sarcasm>, but just tells me that she thinks that "size matters." I thought that the other ads, which made Apple look wonderful, like the iMovie ads, et. al. were much more likely to attract the eyes of people. Mudslinging just turns me off. IP: Logged |

I dislike Dvorak myself, but I agree with you about the Apple ads. The one in particular that annoys me the most features a guy going on about how simple and easy it is to use the computer without having to learn anything, then he goes on to claim that he's a software engineer. Show me a software engineer who doesn't want to learn anything about the machine he's using and I'll show you someone who deserves to be unemployed. IP: Logged |

ah, OK, like not everything he writes is stupid, but that Apple Ad article he wrote was so piggish.... criticizing those people on their physical appearances... come on!!!!! What a troll. WHAT AN APE!!!!!!!

quote: YES, AMEN! Thank you, steen, I was going to say that myself. I looked at the site, and found that incredibly disgusting and horrifying. I love to code and all that stuff, which is why I use and absolutely love Linux. And with KDE3/Mandrake things can be reasonably easy, but there is so much room to explore, and to do things the hard way, in which you learn more. I try to learn something new every day with Linux (and even with Windoze at work, learning more about its guts). Yes, I play MP3s from the Konsole with mpg123, and muck around with perl and wget and all other sorts of stuff. Perhaps this is why I dislike Apple to some degree - it's so easy, such that I can't easily do the hard stuff. I'm not a 'regular user,' but I don't really like the term, 'power user.' IP: Logged |

I did not read the article Mr. Dvorak apparently wrote spearing the new Apple spots. I'll come out and be clear that I think the ads are an embarrassment to the ad biz. I think they went overboard making people seem real to the point that they remind me of a bus load of unemployed people. On the other hand, his recent article declaring the iMac is nothing new did catch my attention. I thought it was ironic reading an article of this kind penned by an unaccomplished hack. It reminded me of a time I was sitting with a group of "feature/MC-for-life" comedians who had nothing better to do than diss the likes of Robin Williams, Chris Rock, Tim Allen and Jerry Seinfeld as ruining comedy. John Dvorak seems like the fat geek all the other geeks didn't like because he acted like he knew everything when in fact he knew very little. Yeah, I liked today's comic. Colonel Panic IP: Logged |

The problem I have with Dvorak isn't his anti-Mac slant. It's the fact that whenever he takes something on, his arguments invariably come down to "I think xyz is a stupid thing for organization abc to be doing because I say they should be doing def instead." That gets REALLY tiresome. REALLY fast. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Does anybody remember when John C. Dvorak had a regular column in what used to be MacUser magazine? IP: Logged |
