Here's a great email and pic from fan Arlen! mmmm cake!!!!

Just saw your newest cartoon, and had to let you know....I did this at
work!!! My wife thought I was nuts, but hey, it's the FIRST BIRTHDAY OF OSX, DAMMIT!! I got lots of chances to talk to my PC using friends, explain
what OSX is, etc.

Mostly they came for the cake.

I am an engineer who was forcibly downgraded to Windows two years ago, but I still try to educate people about the Mac OS. I have a computer collection in my basement, going all the way back to my TI 99, a TRS 80, TimexSinclair, Ohio Scientific, quite a few early Macs, PC Jr., etc. Yep, Geek and proud.

Thanks for a very entertaining website.

Arlen

Lets see, Mozilla 9.9, Smell O' Mints (periodic table of the elements), Jared, Butcher of Songs, a movie from the NASA website, clock, calculator, an open terminal window with the command "tops", "Preview" with a pic of the space station, iTunes, iPhoto...that's about it. I tried to show the "digital lifestyle" that we REALLY live!!!! Most of the other screen shots I took didn't really make sense to the people that were going to look at them, such as Create from Stone Design, Appleworks, or iMovie. I wish Palm Desktop had been released, it would have made a great screenshot.

I had to BUY a cake though...normally I make em, but just didn't have time!!

Thanks for the nice comments!!!!

How was the cake decorated? Do you have a picture of it before the hordes of hungry coworkers descended on it?

I bought a white cake (with cocoanut!) and decorated it with blue decorating icing. It said "Happy Birthday Mac OS X" on one line, and UNIX on the other. I put four "X's" on the sides. Never thought to take a picture of the cake!! LOL!

Blue drink? Why, that would be none other than the Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster, the official beverage of my college drinking club, the E.B. Milliways Society! (can you tell it was a club for geeks?)

I believe it was one of our revered founding mothers (Doris Butts?) who created the first Gargle Blaster, based on the recipe given in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. One part of the club initiation was memorizing the recipe as given in the book and reciting it out loud as the Mixmaster created the ceremonial first Gargle Blaster of the party.

It's been too long since the last Milliways party, so I can't really remember the real ingredients anymore, but the drink was something like Long Island Iced Tea with grenadine and blue curacao (thus the blue color) and a cherry. Next time I boot back into OS9, I'll scan a picture from a past Milliways fete so you can see what it looked like. If I find the recipe, maybe I can make some next year to celebrate OSX's 2nd birthday!

Have you seen the Wired article about this thread and the comic that spawned it? Awesome!

The pizza place was great, perhaps they get custom pizza requests all the time. They suggested not cutting it, to help preserve the X.

I gave them my Mac OS 10.1 upgrade manual to use as a guide for the "X", but I think the "fromage" interface melted a little more than they anticipated. It was a very GUI Mac OS X pizza.
