So what Hot Wheels did you have? Or were you one of those Matchbox kids? Hey, does anyone know the name of that cool futuristic purple car with the dome top?

The Red Barron car with the spiked helmet, and a white convertible with doors that opened.

Also the color changing ones a purple VW Rabbit that turned blue...was my favorite.

As for sizzlers they still make them only under a different name now, we own three or four. maybe the kids and I will get them out this weekend...

Ah fond memories of youth.

I can't remember if my favorite car was a Hot wheels one or Matchbox....

What I do remember most is putting together about 40+ feet of track, starting it on the top bunk of the bunk beds I shared with my younger brother. It ran from there out the second story window and down to the grape arbor by the garage.

My mother thought I was nuts - but hey you should have seen the speed those cars would get with a 15+ foot vertical drop.

Then again - some of the cars slipped off the track and did the straight down plummet to the concrete sidewalk. They never did work as well after that. ;-)

Ya, when a wheel blew or got the wobblies, that was it... you had to take the car out back and shoot it.

If anyone has one, please post a picture of that purple car. I thought for sure I'd be driving one now.

LOL. the Red Baron... that one was cool.

My goodness, I had over 50 cars!

I think my all time favorite Hot Wheels car had to be the Splittin Image. The Johnny Lightening cars were not as good. Still, Hot Wheels had the wheel shaped carrier, but Johnny Lightening had a carrier shaped like Al Unser's (Sr.) Indy 500 winning Johnny Lightening special, and the wheels really rolled.

I can also remember Saturday mornings, a big bowl of Fruit Loops or Cocoa Puffs in my lap, watching the Hot Wheels cartoon show. I don't remember the name of the bad guy's car club...Dexter's something or other? I sort of remember the theme song: "Daytona, Indianapolis, and Bonneville ...lalalala ...lalalala ...lalalala HOT WHEELS!

But you know what toy I really ought to go looking for on e-Bay? Motor-rific! (sp?) I loved Motor-rific, even if most of the best pieces (like the breakaway brick wall!) were actually my sister's.

Forget the Hot wheels. What I want back is Major Matt Mason's Moon Exploration Set. I just loved the lunar crawler with the little bubble trailer. The space station with the octagonal deck was cool to. I just wish the support string on the jet pack were a little longer so he and the sargent could have had longer "flights.". I played with him till his little wire core gumby limbs all broke. Ahh Well. Maybe Matel will resurect him.

I had the cars from the death race 2000. I also had your standard 70's and 80's selection of cars.

Matchbox and HotWheels both.
My favorites were the Stingray (with opening hood), pink Jeep, and my orange BMW. I preferred Matchbox, since the cars looked more like the ones I saw on the Autobahn.

Not only did I have a purple Beatnik Bandit... I STILL HAVE IT!!! BWA HAHA HA!!

Also I had the cool device that looked like a gas station, which had motorized wheels inside that shot your car out like a cannon. I loved that thing. With 30 feet of track, several banked curves, up/down jumpramps and a loop, my days as a 7-year old were full of microautomoive fun.

OK, this prompted a flashback. It was, like, November 1968. I think. Lost my first tooth. The Tooth Fairy graced me with a set of Hot Wheels track, which appeared under my pillow. Snif. I'm getting all choked up now. . .

My favorite was the submarine car from that James Bond movie. I can't remember the name, but it stared Roger Moore.

Were there various models of the Beatnik Bandit? The one we used as a model for the Beatnik Bandit Apple Mouse wasn't quite as cool as the one I had. Mine was more curvy, bigger dome I think. i couldn't find a picture of it on the net and it is driving me crazy.

There there now....

Yes, we all had that one-of-a-kind Bandit that was different from everyone else's.... I remember mine with wings that could fly.. because it loop-d-looped right out the window....

Maybe yours loop-d-looped right into the wall and then the front got rounded...

Snaggy,
I remember at least a couple of bubble-based cars...

One was purple and had some kind of space/alien-related name. That would be the one you've confused with the Bandit. It may have been based on an actual show-car, if memory serves.

The other was metallic gold/lime-ish and had a dual-pontoon shaped body with bubbles on each...

I had the first one, and my brother had the second.

The ironic thing is, as far as i know, these are still in our toy chests in my dad's basement, 30 years later!

I have some Matchbox and Hot Wheels 300ZXes. I saw a couple at the parts counter at the Nissan dealer once, so I bought a couple. The guy behind the counter asked me to make sure I wanted two, so I said, "Well, I have to have two to race."

Later that year, one of my buddies gave me another pair of Matchbox Z cars, one lovingly deformed to match the damage to my real 300ZX after I collected a deer. He said it was a lot tougher to damage the Matchbox car than you might expect!

There was a garage that came with a tool to fix the bent axles. As I recall, there was some sort of treadmill that would show you which way the car pulled. Then there was a wrench of some kind to try and fix it.

I never had one, so I don't know how well it worked.

Ah the good old days...

My cousins would come over with their tracks, and we would connect them to our tracks till we had enough to drop from the roof, across the lawn, through the double loop, and shoot off across the road. The connector on one of the loops was iffy, and a heavy car could disconnect it as it went around the loop.

You didn't put tape on the track to hold the loop together?
