Well, I finally took the plunge into violence laden computer games.

Thanks to AoE2 I discovered a previously unknown digital bloodlust, namely the part where you can't finish burning your enemy's civilization to the ground after they surrender... I don't want some pansy surrender. I want complete obliteration.

So I tried Quake2... it was surprisingly fun! But I suck, and let me tell you why...

The first guy came running at me shooting, and it kind of scared me. but then I got to the point where being shot wasn't so scary. I killed a bunch of guys and couldn't find any more, so I shot the barrels I was standing next to. For anyone who, like myself, has not played Quake, here is a hint: Do not shoot barrels you are standing next to. They will blow up and hurt you more than all the other guys combined.

Now the exploding barrel was ok, I survived. My next thing was swimming. Personally, I don't think you should have to come up for air in a computer game. This will also hurt you. You need to go to the surface and breathe every so often.

The next major discovery I made was that if you are going to casually be dropping grenades on the ground, you should not hang around next to them. They operate along the same lines as exploding barrels.

Before I got to the point where my next "investigation" killed me a coworker offered to play me. I would say that I suffered a crushing defeat, however that would be an understatement. What happened was that I got spanked and sent home to mommy.

I got the running down. Occasionally I ran into or fell off things, but that is to be expected as I do that in RL and I don't think it would be reasonable to expect any more coordination in a video game. That is about all I can say for my acheivements.

In order for me to switch weapons it involved everyone hanging around for a bit not doing any shooting because I had to figure out what was what.

I also have not yet mastered looking around, as it takes me a while to find someone standing right behind me going "shoot me and take my gun." I spend a lot of time looking at ceilings and corners. This is somewhat detrimental as the person you are trying to shoot is rarely hanging around in corners or on ceilings. I would strongly recommend looking other places.

The final spanking I took involved a rocket launcher. For those unfamiliar with the game, a rocket launcher is tres cool. It makes big explosions. Unfortunately I only managed to use the rocket launcher on myself. The dialog at the end of the game went much like this:
"Just a question, did you shoot me at all?"
"Only the shot that finished you off"
"Oh, I had a vague feeling that was the case"

At this point the game was ended. I am assuming that it was because my coworker was laughing to hard to keep playing.

well, quake is a fun game. I hope you don't stop playing because of one bad game. you get better with time. as with all games. I suck at AoE 2 still. maybe i will get better.

Quake is designed to be played by people with 4 hands, or something. Oh, and it's designed to be played with a mouse and and keyboard at the same time. I'm told that it's virtually impossible to become good at Quake if you're a keyboard user.

That's one of the reasons I greatly prefer DOOM to Quake. DOOM is designed to be played with a keyboard. (And preferably a real keyboard, without any Windows keys on it.)

Also, DOOM doesn't require a 3d video card. It runs on real computers.

Ah yes, I remember the days of keyboard doom. My flatmate with the mouse technique would wupp my ass. Then along came quake, which showed me the light. Actually no, it was quake 2. It is possible to battle along with just the keyboard in quake, as there is an amount of vertical aiming that is done for you.

Now, making the transition from keyboard to mouse and keyboard is tricky, but must be mastered if you enjoy FPS's at all. It doesn't take too long and gives so many rewards. Trust me. It is better than (bad) sex

Gamers rule!

I remember the first time I saw Wolfenstein 3D....I recall thinking this may be the coolest thing that I have ever seen.

I laid off the fps after Doom2 died off... And then came back to them when I saw Counterstrike, Tribes and Unreal Tournament. Good times... Good times...

BTW if anyone wants to take a beating in Counterstrike just give me a holler....

Well the first time always sucks, but I can definitively say that given the choice between AoE2 and sex, sex would lose.

I did figure out the keyboard/mouse bit right away though, so I guess that is a point in my favor.

I'm willing to bet good money that someone has not had good sex. Being a hardcore gamer who has never played UT in less than godlike mode, i have still willingly given up a good game of flawless UT in favour of being seduced by my wife............

Well, I loved Wolfenstein 3D, and that was a purely keyboard game, which I liked, since I'm a keyboard person. It bugged me a bit when I was playing Diablo II on my friend's computer that I had to use the mouse in such an awkward manner, I much preferred the fps style. But now that I have RtCW, I have to say that the combo style really is probably the best of both worlds. All the functionality of the keyboard, and my agility with it, combined with the higher resolution of my optical mouse. RtCW is a great game - I'll have to try Quake next (I've never had a good enough video card to play good games until now). It's excellant to be able to enjoy a really high quality version of my first love of the violent fps genre of computer games. And with the cheats, I can play with fire and many other awesome implements of horror. I'm going to go home now and play a quick round.

Quake 2 was terrible, Quake and Quake III are great. The keyboard isn't bad to use, the mouse is a pain, because you can't get precsise enough with it. You should expeiriment with moving the hotkeys though. I have it easy with my little air board, all the keys close enough together...

No pun intended, sorry...

lmao!

I guess I need to maybe track down the first Quake then, if it is better. My system isn't great, so anything that requires decent video is out for the time being. Anytime now (and by that I mean: when I find the time) I am going to start pricing out the parts for the Dream Machine. After I get something up and running that is adequate I have a hot CounterStrike date waiting.

I thought that games were cool, just cool, mind you, until I first played the demo of Myth II.

That was awesome. It introduced me to a whole new level of gameplay. Of course, having a few computers is great cuz I got my sisters to play Gimble with me! Sheer ecstacy! I remember that we really didn't know what the multiplayer units did, so we sent our wights (suicide bombers) to attack eachother. They just happened to meet right where our little dudes with swords were duking out it...BOOM! That was pretty much the end of the battle. I won...with only one healer dude to hold the fort.

As far as fps's go, my favorite is Descent 3. It allows you to go up and down, as well as cruise back, foward, left and right. But I hardly play that now. It's always Myth. =P

I need to get a life.

I downloaded the MythII demo, with some encouragement, last night. I haven't had a chance to mess with it yet, but it is definitely on my to do list. If I like it I will have to go find the full version.
