This movie stars Mel Gibson as a former Minister who has had his faith challenged by the death of his wife in an accident. Joaquin Phoenix plays his brother who has come to live with him to help out on his farm and with his two children. Suddenly crop circles appear in their cornfield, and strange things begin happening. Without giving too much away, the crop circles are navagational signposts for alien craft that are planning a takeover of earth. I have no trouble with the performances in the movie, but the plot is full of holes, and this is what kept me from really enjoying the film. It's explained that the aliens would not use their technological superiority to defeat us, because in the end, they know we would use nukes, making the earth unusable for its resources. But if these aliens are so technologically advanced that they can travel millions of miles through space, why couldn't they just disable the firing mechanisms? Or put an energy field of some kind around the explosion to contain the radiation? Jung's theory of syncronicity is also brought up in the film, but isn't elaborated on enough. The film has elements of humor in it that makes it entertaining, but it is not really scary, just suspenseful at times. Then again I don't get scared at movies, I usually laugh at the scary parts. If you really want to see this movie, I would wait for the video.

I actually enjoyed it, but I was left with a few questions by the end.

First of all, if water hurt the aliens, why would they be remotely interested in a planet that is mostly water?

The ending was too abrupt, and didn't really feel like an ending.

Where were the other aliens? Did they retreat after the one was killed, or what?

Signs was pretty dissatisfying and seemed really incomplete. Shame, too. The remnant of the story that is presented to the audience is well-done.

That was one of the things I had problems with also.

The trailer for this film has just been released in the UK. It looks pretty good, but it's the third film of its kind by the director (M. Night Shyamalan) who also made The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. I'm getting a bit sick of the same 'supernatural premise with a twist' routine in his films. Is there any marked difference in this one?

Not really. I was quite suprised that the script was so flimsy as it was. You'd think with all the writers in Hollywood they could have caught some of the discrepancies.

Well, don't forget, this was written by the same guy who wrote Stuart Little. We can't expect too much from his poor, tired brain

Such a shame, too. Great premise for a movie, great cast, great cinematography, etc.

There's a movie I'd like to see. Talking mice from another planet invade earth driving little red cars!

Yeah, but then you'd have to deal with Celine Dion on the soundtrack. Does anyone else think she looks like an orange cheese grater?

Funny you should say that, for I find her music to grate upon my ears...

Fortunately, I never listen to radio. The only time I encounter her is when I'm stuck listening in a theater before the show starts and they play one of her songs. Actually, she reminds me of a Jester Stick. You know those sticks with a clown's head on top that court jesters carried around in the middle ages.

Yes, very much so. A Jester Stick with a facelift and globules of fake tan all over it.

Is that all it takes? I thought we'd raised the barrier to new depths, scaled to new heights of scraping the bottom of the humor barrel!

IMHO, calling Celine Dion a spoiled brat would be more like the wurst pun.

SPOILERS AHOY!
TURN BACK NOW!
You were warned, this time.

It was explained in the radio/tv reports that the aliens were there to harvest people as slaves.

This was also explained by radio/tv reports. It was assumed that once people in Turkey found a way to harm the aliens they retreated, leaving behind their wounded. The alien that was holding the son hostage was the same alien that had been locked in the pantry and had it's fingertips severed by the kitchen knife (one of the abandoned wounded).

It was a good movie. I just didn't get to enjoy it because I had an annoying audience: specifically a pair of hyenas, directly behind me, who failed to understand that this is not a comedy. Win some, lose some.

I saw this movie last night and I loved it. It's a beautifully done suspense flick. See it with someone who doesn't mind when you grab 'em.

I guess I just think too much when I'm watching a movie. Too much critical thinking. It just seemed to be too much style over substance for me. It was nice style though.

I like the part where Merril says crop circles were thought up by nerds who couldn't get a date! Cruel but funny.

Someo of them *WERE* thought up by nerds who couldn't get dates, there was a special on the discovery channel about it. They wore cameras when they went out and did it to show how they did it, and there was film shot from in the sky, they made an entire 'crop circle' site just like the ones done all the time, and it only took them about an hour to do, and there was no physical evidence left to prove it was done by humans except for the video tapes they themselves shot, it's actually become a business, they have people pay them to make crop circles..(this was in England.)
