I'm usually a VERY patient fellow, but I've found in the last few weeks my patience has been very short. I work for the DSL helpline at AOL (please, don't rant at me for working there, it's a living)and, normally, I will bust my hump to get someone's computer up and on the DSL or figure out why it can't. I like to think I am very good at my job. I've noticed a tendency of mine to get short and curt with people--mostly the folks who call and tell me how to fix their problem, insist that I'm wrong or call me incompetent. When I lose all patience with callers, I feel guilty that I mishandled the whole thing; there has to have been a better way to resolve the situation. I've lost sleep over a few of these issues, but I do try to learn from each one to do better next time. The next area to work on patience is dealing with my mother. I suppose therapy awaits on that. Saw this on the Net. It used to be on the door of one of my college friend's dormroom. "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I can not change, the courage to change the things I can not accept, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I had to kill because they pissed me off." LT, if it helps any you may yell at Me. I don't mind verbal abuse and it might help relieve some tension. Perhaps we could have a "bash Zorro" section for those who need someone to direct anger at. and if ya need help to get angry at Me, I am pretty good at getting under peoples skin. I could even pretend to be a caller and make up some problems with My service. Anything to help out a fellow geek >;o) .........Z IP: Logged |

quote: Thanks, Zorro! That's the nicest offer I've had in a long time! I really don't want to yell at people. For one thing, it leaves me feeling bad when I do. I don't need the hassle of it. I'll eventually learn how to get around it. Thanks again! IP: Logged |

Don't feel guilty, I don't mind at all. I am used to verbal abuse, it has no effect on Me anymore. I actually have learned to enjoy the fact that someone would waste so much energy on Me. To think that I could have such an impact on someones life is just incredible. I don't posess feelings that can be hurt, nor do I have pride. I think I even managed to be without shame, at least most of the time. Insults are familiar to Me, they bring Me comfort. They are one of the few memories I can hold onto from childhood........Z IP: Logged |

I know how you feel, LT. I did tech support for a medical software company for a couple of years...I know how users can really get on the nerves. I am not a person who can easily handle stupidity in others, so it was probably not the best line of work for me to be in anyway. The way I used to cope, to keep me from blowing up at the stupid users (or more usually, my stupid co-workers) was to be sure to do lots of de-stressing things that I liked outside of work. Gardening was really good for me, especially weeding and pruning. Instead of tearing people's heads off, I tore dandelion heads off. If nothing else, you always have the GC Forums in which to blow off steam. IP: Logged |
