I say this not because i feel like I'm better than the rest of the geeks, I'm not. I'm one of you. A little different from the normal garden variety geek but a geek all the same.
Now the thing is I see geeks whine....
whine, complain, bitch and moan....They do all this, they identify their problems but they do nothing to really deal with them...They talk about being reclusive and how it would be so nice to get noticed and the run back to the safety of their geekosphere, where not even sunlight enters....They talk about social ineptitude but never put a moments effort into truly getting out there....I mean how do you expect anything to change if you don't put any effort into it....
As for the girlfriend thing, if you're not the best looking guy in the group, don't go after the girl with the supermodel physique/looks, there are equally worthy smart, nice, caring, kind girls out there....who will love you to death if given the chance....because if you as geeks depend on the superficial factors to help you decide who you want to date, then why shouldn't others look at you using the same rules.....
I'm not saying all this to raise contorversy or anything but the next time I hear a geek complaining about these things and not doing anything, he/she's getting an earful....there is a world out there people, one which doesn't consist of bits and bytes, interrupts and adresses, it consists of real people, let us get out there and get noticed for once.... I for one am sick of this whining......and I mean no offense when i say this, please get off your asses and do something about whatever the hell it is that is bugging you, instead of wasting time complaining about it....
If at any point this post has pissed of people, I apologise.....and hope that maybe being pissed will get you out from in front of the sun box and into the sunlight where there are much better chances of finding human companionship....
and last but not least, i used to be a whiny, reclusive, shy, introvert geek....but then i realised what i was doing wrong because of what someone told me....and I'm quite different from what i was.....I hope this post makes sense....I write it as I'm almost asleep but I have wanted to get this off my mind for a while....Please don't start a flame war.....
P.s: wrong emoticon....it seems to have defaulted to that or something....

I think that's almost a given.

First of all: I firmly believe that to complain is the human condition. I've known tons of people who bitch about how much their life sucks without doing a damn thing to change it -- and believe me, not all of em are geeks. Not even close to all of em.

Second: change is something that is difficult for most people even under the best of conditions. That's hardly something unique to the geek set. Most people prefer the misery that they know to the risk of something new -- change is unknown and scary, especially when the outcome may be worse just as easily as being better. It may be a bit harder for most geeks, but that ties in with the problems most geeks tend to complain about (ne social ineptitude) rather than being unique to the geek condition per se.

Third: frankly, complaining in the company of friends with similar experience is about more the complaining. It's supportive for one thing; complaints tend to garner "I here ya, my friend, been there too" sort of responses, and in many cases that human connection is enough to provide relief from the pain or stress that was causing the complaint to begin with. It also sometimes elicits advice and suggestions on how to overcome the problem. Acting on those suggestions, of course, is then left to the complainer, but that's true whether or not they've sought advice, so argubaly it puts them in a better position than it would have if they'd kept their mouth shut.

Too much complaining, of course, is no good for anyone -- but that's true of just about anything, isn't it?

I guess we could call it meta-whining.

Seriously though, while I'm a firm believer in personal responsibility, sometimes an all out bitch, whine, and moan fest can be fun, cathartic, and healthy. Of course, these bitch fests only work among peers, which is why you hear a lot of geeks bemoaning geekiness on these boards.

Please note that whining is like alcohol, sleep, and chocolate - healthy only in moderation!

Next up: I'm going to start a geek boot camp where you can come, complain, whine and then when you're done. there will be a person assigned to you to make sure that you acheive such a state where you will never complain about the same thing again. The scrawny will eat properly and work out, the quiet will be made to give public speeches and go to frat parties and so on and so forth.......
geek hell, anyone?

You know, I like it, but I have a nasty sense of humor some times.

The frat party/public speaking sounds terrible. Then again, I don't complain about my anti-social nature.
The eating right part is a luxury I would love to have time for, but then I may have to cut back on working out ('cuz cutting back on school is out of the question).

Two things. When we go there -
1.Do we all get to wear adorable little clothes like you do?
2.Do we also get certificates stating we have passed certain levels of whinning and complaining? If we do i want my 'tificate to be tatooed on my breast for all the world to feel..:P hehe.

Have you ever just tried doing everything without argueing, complainig or whinning. Look for the joy in everylittle thing you do and it all seems to make sence.

Breaking the whining habit is not so easy. I'm an only child; when I did it, it got attention. It became a lifestyle that's lasted for over two decades. How do you break something like that? Just telling yourself "don't whine" does not work. I've tried.

As for whining about the opposite sex, I don't do that. Most of my friends are guys, and they do most of the whining. No offense guys, but you're easy to handle.

I whine a lot. However, most of the time I just go out and figure out what to do about the thing that I was whining about. Does that make sense?

Hey, Charisma, you're not going to convince people you really have charisma if you annoy them by posting new comments to threads which have been dead for a month (look at the dates).

You're not gonna make many new friends if you whine about niggling little things all the time, Tao.

If you'd really rather have topics closed automatically, I suppose it'll happen and the issue will become moot.
