I just got a bit of a scare. I'm not new to this site, but I haven't been for a few months, due to other things which have come up. I thought I'd take another look, and I decided the quickest way to find the site would be to enter "geek culture" in the Google search engine. A few pages came up in the Google listing with the word "geekculture" in the U.R.L., and I clicked on one of them - and I got rather a shock upon seeing a message saying basically that the U.R.L. didn't exist. Thinking that the site had just had a momentary glitch, I tried again, and then again - and got the same results. I got an unpleasant hollow feeling inside me, and the dreadful truth dawned on me that the site had finished - it was gone for ever! After all, web sites do disappear sometimes; and I knew it was most unlikely it would ever surface again. I kicked myself for not having dropped in more often while I was able to; and, although I've perhaps been only a spasmodic visitor (and contributor), I realized how much I liked being able to visit, how I liked being able to post messages from time to time, and reading others' messages. I realized how much I was going to miss being able to come in, even if I do sometimes let it go for a while. I was unwilling to just accept this awful fact yet, however. It is also possible for sites to be down for hours at a time - even days - and I thought I would just try again a day or two later. However, although this *could* be the case here, I had the pessimistic hunch that in reality the site was probably just *gone*, as if it had never been. Still unwilling to give up hope just yet, I looked at the Google listing again, and I found another site called "geeklove", and thought that might be related - or at least that it might give me clues as to whether Geek Culture really was lost and gone forever. I went there, and was so relieved to see the familiar page come up again, and a wave of relief washed over me as I realized that the site had probably simply moved to another address; I hoped it would be unchanged, other than that (and other than new messages being added, of course). And, indeed, everything seemed as normal now. However, only minutes later, I found the "geekculture" pages were working again, and realized (as my apprehension of the true situation underwent yet another shift) that the site hadn't moved at all: instead, it appeared merely that the "geeklove" site was a duplicate of the "geekculture" site, and "geekculture" still appeared to be the main location of the site. (I don't understand why this would happen, but I have before encountered web pages, and even entire sites, that are duplicated at different domain names.) Well, all seems okay, after all that. I don't know another site quite like this, and I hope it stays around for a while. I'm not quite sure if I fully belong to this community, and I suppose I'll just fit in to whatever extent I am able (however much or little that is), and hope I can just be accepted for who I am; but I like the light-heartedness of this forum, its offbeat humour, and the friendly atmosphere. The first part of the site I saw, over a year ago, was one of the threads about computer names, which amused me enormously. I was particularly intrigued by the fact that many computer owners actually seem to think of their computers as having a personality, even being alive in a sense, and being "he" or "she", rather than just "it". That's what first drew me into this forum, and I started writing in myself. After the shock I just had briefly, I felt like writing in once again, and saying how I glad I was that the site is still around. If the owners ever contemplate closing the site for any reason, I hope this helps persuade them to keep going. I suppose I'm not alone in feeling this way, and that quite a few others here would also be sorry if the site were to die. Regards, Michael. IP: Logged |

Yep, geekculture.com also has a few other domains parked on it, such as joyoftech.com and geeklove. If the owners ever contemplate closing the site for any reason, I hope this helps persuade them to keep going. Thanks Michael, it does actually help. The only reason this site would die would be lack of financial resources, which unfortunately is a daily concern. I suppose I'm not alone in feeling this way, and that quite a few others here would also be sorry if the site were to die. I'll resist the urge to post a link to the support page.... IP: Logged |

Michael, I too would be sorry to see the site go down, even though I'm a newbie to this forum. I think it's tremendously important to have places online where you can geek out without getting flamed, and where everyone has something to say other than, "OMIGOD u no im soooo HOTTTT!!!" IP: Logged |

Disturbing. Just a few minutes ago, I tried to get to www.geekculture.com and twice I got this wierd page saying, muchlyparaphrasedish, "sorry, we couldn't find your URL, but would you like to use this generic search engine to search the other sites we host?", as if I were trying to find you on Tripod or Geocities. Which is strange because I thought you weren't hosted by anyone else but instead had dedicated a server(s) for this site, oder? Anyhow, when I tried the same thing a third time, I got here. Were your servers down for a minute or so, maybe? IP: Logged |

That is really wierd, nope, the server shouldn't have been down, but if it does, you should only get a not found error. We're on a dedicated server, hosted by Interland. IP: Logged |
