"Huh? Are you crazy Dude?" Maybe, but it's an I think of it as a leap of faith between us, the creators of the content, and you, the enjoyer of what we do. Think of it as a chance to become a benefactor, or a philanthropist of GeekCulture. A crazy idea maybe, but perhaps if enough friends can help us in this way, we can continue to provide the laughs for everyone. http://www.geekculture.com/joyoftech/joyarchives/subscription.html IP: Logged |

Aw... Now I'm gonna feel like a weasel for not paying to view your comics.... But that can't be helped. We are poor. IP: Logged |

I don't particularly like paypal, and I see that the credit card people ream you. Is a check from a US bank OK? I would prepay for a year if doing that. IP: Logged |

Oh no! How can I afford subscription when I'm getting laid off (90% probability) at the end of this month? Anyway, I've got an idea for you. How about you create AY2K/JoT animations and give them only to people who pay? But not shockwave/flash animations, but real, fluid animation (yes, Death By Sysadmin was great for something we get for free, but it's not the thing you see on TV). Nitrozac's great drawings and interesting, funny, cute and identifiable[1] characters have a lot of potential. I want to see more of them. And to discourage people from sharing the animation on the media piracy services, each copy will be watermarked somehow, and people who share your animation will have their membership terminated (and possibly publicly humilated). - Beenay IP: Logged |

I appreciate the problems Web comics have with feeding the artists. It doesn't usually work. It's something I fear about the Internet: that small sites will start to suck and go all irregular because they can't pay for their resources without a second job, despite superior content and design. Scott McCloud has some thoughts on it that still aren't workable, but that i hope will be soon. However, I'm poor. Just spent 3 months essentially with no work, pay for the work I DID do has been delayed (mind if I call them bastards again? because they are, the bastards) and I have a short term loan to payoff and a car to buy (last one lost the tranny). I really *do* think $5 is too much to spend. If I had more cash and wasn't so damn in debt, I'd be happy to kick in. I had to pay for my print comics, I don't see why Web comics are inherantly different (except custom has made them free more often) (also, web comcis can do things print can't, but that's beside the point). Unfortunately, I'm at the point of "do without" rather than "pay the cash," not because I'm willful, but because I'm trying to keep my family housed. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Well, I did the /. subscription thing, and Mandrake Club, as I want to see great things continue to stay alive. I like my /., can't do without my Linux-Mandrake (which I download, not buy as CD's), and I love my JoT/AY2K/Forums, so I'm probably going to subscribe. I don't think that 4.65/mo. is that bad, it's $55 a year. While I am a student, I have a job, and $4.65 is a small fraction of my paycheck, particularly over the course of a month. It also equates to about 3 gallons of gas. The only thing I wouldn't mind as a subscriber benefit, which is [likely] impossible with static .html pages, would be ad-free viewing like /. has. I have been enjoying that immensely. But I'm glad to help keep this great site going, because the web would be a little emptier without this place. IP: Logged |

Subscriber-only benefits would have to be simple and easy. If Nitrozac & Snaggy wasted hours upon hours coming up with some crazy "each copy is watermarked" stuff, they'd have no time left for drawing comics! Really, the only "perk" I'd want (if I were a registered subscriber) is a regularly published AY2K comic. I do, however, have my Official After Y2K Fan Club Member membership card (#6). I wonder if those are still being sold. And I've got all those T-shirts... and magnets.... IP: Logged |

Hi people, thanks for your great input. Beenay, animations are something we would love to do, but they're just way too time consuming for us to do at this point. Maybe the Cartoon Channel will buy the production rights to The Adventures of the Techno-Talking Babes, platypus: don't sweat it, we know there are a lot of people who are unable to pay, which is why this is voluntary. We don't want anyone to do without, so this is our attempt to find a workable middle ground. dragonman97: Ya, we'd like to be able to offer the no ads, but at the moment, I'm not sure how we would do that without a complete overhaul. (if people have any ideas, please post them in a new thread, not this one) Really, the only "perk" I'd want (if I were a registered subscriber) is a regularly published AY2K comic. IP: Logged |

I think it's a good idea. The radio station I listen to relies on pledges from listeners to keep broadcasting, so why shouldn't GeekCulture do the same? Besides, JoT is usually funnier than the most of the comics in the paper, which I pay for. Maybe you could have some sort of membership bonus, like the radio station does. Or, better yet, pledge now, and get a free autographed print of your favorite ay2k comic. That alone would make me pledge more. Nayt ------------------ IP: Logged |

I think it's a good idea. The forums alone are worth the subscription fees, add the comics and you're getting a bargain. Again, I think the voluntary subscription idea is a good one. I don't mind my subscription helping fund a service so that people who can't afford it can use it. Other people have paid for and funded services and facilities that I've used when I otherwise wouldn't have been able to afford it, so it's nice to put something back. I also took the opportunity to order myself some T-Shirts for me and my TTB (adding the subscription option to the T-Shirt store would be a good idea, so you don't have to use the back button or link via the forums though) IP: Logged |

How about you donate what you think the comic, forums, IRC entertainment, love, joy, Brandy, etc... are worth to you? C'mon, why would you donate more than you think its worth? You might as well just order the spiffs you want on top of your order! IP: Logged |

Interesting discussion. I gave what I thought was appropriate, without hesitation. (Not to pat myself on the back, just a statement of fact) But, I did it without thought of "What can Nitrozac & Snaggy do for me now that they're getting some of my dough?" If it works out, they'll do that: by continuing to do what they do for me by creating the amazing stuff they do. And yes, I'm willing to contribute, so that poor college students and fixed income families can have the Joy of Tech. I'll carry some of that, gladly. But I won't ask Nitro and Snaggy to do more than they already do, which is plenty. If they offer, and can afford to do something for subscribers, that's cool. If not, I couldn't care less, as long as they keep doing their geek thing here. Hope that doesn't sound harsh or self-righteous, but I wanted to put some perspective in. =bd Just my $.02/month IP: Logged |

I can't wear the "geekier than thou" t-shirt because I can never be sure if one of the people viewing it might actually be geekier than I, and although my intellect is in the superior range I can't claim to be a "Genius", but it is incontrovertible that I am a super fan. During my many travels, I've been to alot of co-op natural food stores up and down the east coast (and one in TX too). I don't know if y'all are familiar with the concept, but one of the ways they stay in biz is thru paying or working memberships. The paying membership is obvious, you pay an annual fee and get a discount. working members actually run the registers, cleanup, stock the shelves and for this, they also get a discount (sometimes more than the paying members'). maybe y'all could work out something like this for the people who are kinda poor (admittedly, not me usually, although feb-march 2002 are kinda tight). beats me what kinda tasks could be farmed out to "working" JoT members, but I just thinks the ideas up,,,,, ,,,ahh, WAN socialism,,,,,or maybe anarcho-capitalism,,,,, IP: Logged |

Here's one idea we had for SuperFans. Superfans can send in a picture of themselves, or of their pet, or something of their choice, and Nitrozac will draw them. This image will be made into a SuperFan button. The SuperFan will then get a button, and the button will be added to our collection on the webstore, so other people can actually order "The SuperFan Collection." Plus, the superfan will most likely also end up in a cartoon at some point. IP: Logged |
