As I mentioned in my Hawaii thread (and others...) I'm now working at RadioShack. We have in the store here a little portable Shortwave radio and I would like to play with it and learn a little something about it (I'm thinkin' it'd be cool to have in Hawaii, since there's only like 3 regular broadcast stations out there). I don't even know where to start, so far all I've found is the time beacon. Google didn't even really help! So, anyway, are there any Shortwave geeks out there that could help me? Thanks in advance!!

I was a SWL (short wave listener) before becoming an amateur radio (which uses shortwave and other bands) operator.

Arguably the best guide is _Passport to World Band Radio_

you probably aren't going to be satisfied with anything but the highest end stuff at Radio Shack (the book does have some radio reviews, as well as general listening advice)

The magazine Monitoring Times covers scanner (VHF/UHF), but also has shortwave stuff too I think.
