Trolls can be horrible things, but every now and then, a troll with a sense of humour will post something that is just so dum I have to laugh. So go ahead, try to post a stupid troll saying of your own....you know, a collection of words that sounds funny, or makes you laugh, or turns your hair blue. IP: Logged |

I'm wondering... is this article itself a really elaborate troll? Her definition of Munchausen syndrome doesn't seem to match with other definitions I've seen (IANAP however) and that bit about the first verse of "I Am The Walrus" strains credibility. I pulled off one of these in high school, where I put forth a really convincing (well) case that Macbeth acted the way he did becuase of his unresolved Oedipus complex. I got an A on the report but it was liberally decorated with 24-point livid green stamps reading "BULLSHIT" meaning I didn't succeed in trolling my prof but it was fun while it lasted. . . Oh almost forgot, my favorite troll (edited for nitrovision): "Bambi, naked and pet... I mean pleased." IP: Logged |

LOL, jello! It occurred to me that it was an elaborate troll paper. I suspected it at the part that says 2 trolls that go by the name Rob M. and Jeff B were taking poppers and the link led to some news site. Then it occurred to me that most people who comment on Slashdot are newbies, so in fact Slashdot itself is all troll, the stories are posted to incite posts. Jon Katz's stuff, you really have to wonder, it's very trolly. I think it's a hoax, but it is a good topic for an anthropologic paper. :P Here goes a another try; IP: Logged |

Yes, this is a put-on; no doubt about it. First, there is no Amy Dhala enrolled as a student, or on faculty or staff at the University of Texas at Austin. Second, consider the name itselfif its not a riff on amygdala, a part of the limbic brain having to do with cognitive function, Im a Dutchman. Third, consider section 6.3, where the author abruptly breaks character for several paragraphs and imitates a trollish hacking of hir own paper. Fourth, a careful reading reveals a high factor of buzzwording, with the writer stringing together sociological terms to form polysyllabic gibberish. IOW: this, ladles and jellyspoons, is a complete shuck. IP: Logged |

Nah, Amy Dhala is, of course, a play on the character name of every troll's favorite actress. Amy Dhala... Amidala... natalie portman... hot grits... etc. Nice subtle troll reference there. IP: Logged |

The question that comes to my mind is, why? Why would some troll go through all the trouble of creating this document? It seems that someone has way toooooo much time on their hands. One other way of looking at it, is that it could have been created to ellict(?) responses so the author could use them in a real paper, or research study of some kind. Maybe one about how people react to being tricked by a troll. The author left several clues that this paper was fake, enough to trip the warning bells in the mind, as it were. BTW, Nitrozac where did you find this, was it posted somewhere? I would be curious to see any responses to it. IP: Logged |

Hey everybody! Spiralx is a troll! He's Astrid Leur! He was trolling us all along! So, tell us, why do you troll? How long does it take to write a troll post? How old are you? Still at school? Girl problems? Do you hate women? What's the scoop? Come on, you've got an audience now, I'd like to know the reasoning. IP: Logged |

quote: No, I'm not Astrid Leuer, my knowledge of artificial intelligence and philosophy isn't up to that kind of level at all... I've only got this account here, I've not posted that many times and I haven't trolled anyone. But seeing as you didn't pick up on the clues, here's another one.
quote: Yes, I troll on slashdot. That's hardly a secret to anyone who reads it regularly. Why? Because I was very bored at work, starting reading the stuff posted by other trolls on trolltalk and enjoyed it. And it's a challenge. As for the other questions, well it should take about two or three minutes to bash out a few paragraphs to get in the top twenty comments (see my /. troll HOWTO for more tips). I'm not at school, I don't have any girl problems and I have a busy social life IP: Logged |

Hullo, one and all, back for the attack and all that. John Montoya speaking, alias streetlawyer, alias jsm2, alias LWM, alias a fat bloke. In answer to the various questions, no I don't hate women. If you're looking for people who do have a fairly serious problem with women, you might want to take a closer gander at your regular posters; I'd single out Tau Zero as someone who really doesn't seem to like anyone who isn't exactly like himself. If you look back at the posts, you'll see that I'm actually pushing a fairly strong feminist line. I'm a lurker on the Colorado University Marxism & Feminism mailing list and almost all of the feminist theory posted was genuine -- some of the sexual politics on this site really pissed me off, so I went in hard. The soft-porn antics of the early Astrid character were perhaps less forgivable, but I had to establish the statue fetish theme in order to achieve the goal of working in the words "naked and petrified" in a context where nobody would object to them. Which, I hope you'll admit, was a quite nice Situationist prank. The Artificial Intelligence thread was basically started in order to redress the balance with the soft porn thing. I was taken to task, quite correctly, by a couple of people on the troll mailing list, for putting over a pretty silly and offensive female characterisation, so I thought I'd give her some intellectual firepower. All of Astrid's arguments on that thread, by the way, are correct and come directly from the mouth of John Searle. The reason I stayed on after the initial prank was partly inertia, partly for the AI discussion, but mainly because I couldn't believe some of the opinions being regularly expressed here. At times, it felt like a trip through Alice in Wonderland as rewritten by John Katz. The Joy of Tech reviews were basically satire. I dash these posts off pretty quickly, as they're usually stream of consciousness stuff, and I type fast (I used to be a freelance journalist, so I'm used to thinking in readable copy). The JoT reviews were the hardest ones to do; they tended to involve about a morning's background thinking time, then anything up forty minutes to write. Anyway, happy holidays, and sorry to anyone who was fooled. Anyone who got annoyed by anything Astrid posted; I'm afraid it was probably your own fault. All of my genuine troll posts were received pretty easily. If I told you that you had questionable sexual politics, then it was because you did. And I'm not exactly sorry for raising the blood pressure of a couple of racists either. bye! IP: Logged |
