Mars *SOLD!*

Auction is over. Thanks to all the bidders!

This is a painting of our neighbour. It's Mars, the red planet, a cold tiny world of rust, named after the Roman god of war. I painted it from a reference photo taken by the Hubble telescope. What I love about this view is that it is one from Earth, from our perspective, looking at it from our world thorough a giant telescope.

Mars has been getting a lot of attention lately with the successful launch and deployment of Mars Curiosity and talk of perhaps of a mission to flyby or even land people there. I think it's so romantic that we can actually see the planet with the naked eye from earth, as well as view picture postcards of its landscapes taken by Curiosity and other rovers. This is what I wanted to capture, the romance we humans have with the night sky and the excitement of science and space exploration that helps us to view and understand our neighbouring planets.

I like to gaze at this painting and dream about what it would be like to be there, seeing things that no other human has ever seen. I also like to imagine that there is evidence of life having existed there, or maybe even that life still exists there. What an incredible discovery that would be. It's fun to dream of the red and dusty world, with its thin atmosphere, incredible canyons, giant volcanoes, polar ice caps, and two strange moons. Dreaming about Mars seems to be a particularly human trait, as so many have done it, from the ancients tracking it's strange path through the night sky, to writers such as H. G. Wells and Ray Bradbury, to engineers and explorers from Von Braun, to the amazing Curiosity team at NASA, to Elon Musk.

Best of luck to all bidders, and to the winner, I know you will adore this painting as much as I do, and I hope it will inspire many of your own Martian dreams.
