My cousin's son died today.
He was 19.
His father found him dead on the couch when he came home from lunch. From what they tell me, he slipped into a diabetic coma and his heart just stopped.
I really was never all that close to him but it still hits me so close to home. I know how devastated I would feel. Especially since my oldest is only 2 years younger than he was. Couple that with the fact that my son is now a year sober from a drug addiction...
There were days I thought I would lose my son...I would stay awake at night with dread that he would just run off, and that I would get a call from the police that he was found dead...
Now my son's head is on straight. A few weeks ago he thanked me for being so stubborn and not giving up on him. He said, "Not every father would do what you did. I'd probably be dead without you."
Still trying to wrap my head around it all.

all the best, live like you don't have much time left and so forth.

Dr Who, I saw your post a couple of days ago, I have been pondering how to address this. How does one parent console another parent and cousins at that. Please do not use the common platitudes, express how hard it must be to face this loss. State that if he needs another father to talk to that you would try to be available.
ps Parents should not have to grieve for their offspring.

Sorry to hear about your cousin's son, sad news indeed.
One of my best friends died when he was 18,. It's tragic on so many levels, and of course for the parents, they never truly recover.

DocWho, for your 17 year old to admit that to you, that's pretty darn good.
