Me: can I use the micro-balance?

Coworker: If you open the door, and don't smell chlorine gas, yes.

coworker: or you can hold your breath and work really fast.

ps

yes THAT chlorine gas which was used in the big one (WW1) as a chemical weapon. Oxalyl Chloride , was being reacted with water, outside of a fumehood 'cause there is no micro-balance near the fume hood!! Makes some Cl2 in the process.

My former lab just kept balances in the hood. It seemed smarter than having everyone else wear masks or hold their breath.

Xanthine is right. Put the balance in the hood. If they need all the figures, they'll still need to turn off the fans so the breeze doesn't wobble the pan. Or use a glove box.

Not a practical solution.

I would first need to find a new home for the A-to-Z, the Blue Badges, the front panel off the radio and the scraper thingy for the windscreen. [Wink]

Is that all you have in your glovebox? I have much more stuff in mine, but it is at least 2 cubic meters in size.

Which would be what we would do if we handled such compounds on a regular basis, However, moving a balance for one day is not an option, if you move a balance it is no longer qualified and according to the rules needs recalibration.

Yeah, so we used to on occasion work with dry acrylamide, which is a fantastically flaky and light and fun cumulative neurotoxin. It's also a carcinogen. And it's quite soluble in water. So you can imagine that none of us wanted to inhale that shit. But we didn't want to screw up our balance either. So we...wait for it...dedicated a hood. Very little else that we worked with needed to be contained like the acrylamide, but we decided that it was worth surrendering the space in exchange for good lab practices (not moving the balance) and good health (not inhaling carcinogenic nerve toxin).

Just sayin'.
