Thanks, and may this year, and this decade, be better than the last for all of us.

'Twas quite a show here in Melbourne.

In previous years the fireworks were launched from barges on the river, we could see them from Casa Del Druid, but partially obscured by the high buildings of the central city.

This year they were launched from the tops of the high buildings, so we had an unobstructed view from our front balcony, very impressive.

Mrs Druid and I sat out and watched the 9:30 kids fireworks show with some friends, then crawled off to bed like a pair of boring old farts.

Happy New Year, one and all.

The noughties are gone...and while I have some good memories from them*, I'd be delighted to see this decade go a bit better.

Maybe fewer people will die, the economy will get a boost, and people will be free to get health care so even fewer will die. I can hope, can't I?

(*and in fact, I just recalled a fine memory to the tune of "Forest of the Dead")

nitpick

Just as the year 2000 was the end of the 20th century and not the beginning of the 21st, 2010 is not the beginning of the new decade but rather the end of this one. The new decade begins 2011.

end nitpick

Happy New Year to you all!!

Nitpicking the nitpick

Technically, the calendar started on February 24th, 1582. It just sounds older because it was backdated.

Besides that, a decade is an arbitrary ten year span. Nothing requires it to be aligned to a particular year. When someone refers to a decade, they do so using a starting year (such as the 90s, 00s and so forth). Logic dictates that the year used as a basis for the name of a decade would be included in the decade.

</pendant>

Anyway, happy new years to all everyone. Hopefully 7DA will be much better than 7D0 was.

That would be true if we numbered decades the way we number centuries, the years 1-10 would be the first decade, and 2001-2010 would be the 201st decade.

But we don't number decades that way, so we're free to call any ten year span a decade, and choose whatever boundary we find convenient.

Of course, if we were referring to "the first decade of the 21st Century" then your numbering would be correct, 2001-2010.
