How the heck is Nashville in the top ten of the unhappiest cities? Nashville is FABULOUS! I live here and I am SUPER happy, this is all wrong. Now, Detroit, that is another story...

Well, it -is- the home of country music which is basically emo music for old men who drink instead of cutting themselves.

Is that a deliberate pun on the title of my favourite ever Interpol track? [Wink]

My boyfriend's sister recently moved to Nashville to try and make it as a country musician, and she absolutely love it there. I'm a big fan of (alt)country music myself... probably won't earn me any popularity around these parts [Razz] ... but there's something about boozy bluesy barroom twanginess that does it for me everytime [crazy]

Hm, this is odd that Business Week has "unhappiest" and Forbes has Most Miserable: http://www.forbes.com/2008/01/29/detroit-stockton-flint-biz-cz_kb_0130miserable.html

Yeah, frankly, I tend to call bullshit on nearly all of these types of "studies" for a variety of reasons, one of the key reasons being that happiness, unhappiness, and certainly "misery" are highly subjective. They are qualitative not quantitative. You can look at various quantitative numbers such as income, housing, etc. but there is certainly a built in assumption that those numbers correlate with a city's inhabitants' state of happiness.

I am increasingly critical and wary of the correlation/connections made by psychologists and sociologists that material wealth is specifically the key index to tracking happiness.

Tax rates as a measure of misery????

That's the most fscked thing I've read in a 'serious' publication in a long time.

Someone should tell the genuises at Forbes that many of the high-tax European countries regularly appear in lists of the worlds happiest countries (as measured by actually asking people how happy they are).
