On this, my six-hundred-fifty-fifth post on these forums (of which I've been a member far longer than any other Intertron-based community), I am going to post something that might be rather controversial.

I've done it before. I've even been that one lone Softie standing before the great force that is the Mac Love of this forum, a place few would envy me for standing.

However, I am no longer the naive youngster who couldn't understand why people didn't like Windows. My viewpoint is far (or at least a bit more) learned and worldly, now. There are, in truth, two remaining reasons that I continue to use Windows.

1: To keep at least moderately current in IT, as the field uses quite a bit of the W-stuff.

2: For games.

However, since the construction of my new desktop, Radh1ka, I've left my little laptop, a brand-less, blue system by the name of Guilty Spark, with nothing to do except satiate my cravings for porn and music, in the evenings. This is a very boring set of tasks for the machine, and I felt, recently, that he deserved a more dignified purpose. Specifically, that of Alternative Operating System Research (AOSR, not that I'll ever use the acronym again).

But, here comes the controversial part. I didn't go straight for Linux. Perhaps I should have, but I decided instead to try something I had been aching to for a very long time. It's at least moderately illegal, but, well, I suppose I can trust you fine folks to keep my somewhat-secret.

I acquired an image of, and installed, OSX86.

I assure you, this attempt was a labor of love. While I lack the resources to purchase an Apple, I have a deep fondness for OSX, and the BSD that backs it. And though I do have a marked distaste for Steve Jobs, I like to think that the Woz might approve the open-mindedness and low-to-moderate hack value of the endeavor.

At any rate. Spark (now called "Penitent Tangent," or "Penn") runs a hacked version of OSX 10.4.8. Through my efforts, most of the hardware works flawlessly, but the wireless is non-functional (which is actually a plus, as far as I'm concerned), and I have to choose between running the monitor in native resolution, or with Quartz acceleration (one or the other, not both). To boot, the built-in mouse and keyboard will eventually halt, but I'm too lazy to apply another hack to fix it.

As of now, I feel I've had my fun. I've selected Ubuntu as a replacement (on the basis of ease-of-setup, and driver support), and will reformat the system relatively soon. Why I'm posting this here is because I feel (or hope) that the community will find some moderate interest in it, or will berate me for stealing half of what is supposed to be a beautiful synergy of perfectly-configured hardware and software.

Either way. Here's a couple screenshots.

So tempting... I'm not getting a Mac in a long time, so I should be learning how to use OS X, but I don't know, with those issues I can't get full advantage of it...

Well, it does vary from hardware configuration to hardware configuration. Mine has an ATI Radeon 9600 Mobility, which is not exactly the finest in cross-platform hardware. The InsanelyMac OSX86 forums and the OSX86 Project Wiki (both found here) both have tons of information on hardware compatibility.

Of course, it's all illegal. OSX lisenses are non-transferable unless you're in the Apple Dev network. I can't really advocate anything that I have done, exploratory and innocent as it may be.

Perhaps this is not so controversial as I thought. >.>
