Well folks it is all but a done deal. I am going to be working offshore. The final salary has yet to be settled but it's going to be around 10 - 12 thousand a month; that's four times my present income minimum. The work is basically a clerk's job.

I will have high speed internet access, so I will be able to continue my online classes for my Masters degree, I might have to share a room with 2 people at most, the bathrooms are private and the food is excellent; It's almost like living in a hotel.

I can hardly believe it's happening. One more person has to approve it, but they are so short on clerks and I am more than qualified so there is no reason that it won't go through.

Sweeet!

With all the talking in here about jobs (you + dnm in the clubhouse), I feel pretty left out that I haven't found one.. darn..
And all I want is to be a little intern/part-time photographer's assistant.

Congratulations! And the nice things about that is that there is (usually) few spending occasions, so you get back bored, but with more than a few grands to correct the situation.

Enjoy your new job!

'Offshore' ?

That wouldn't happen to be a certain very sandy place that's much in the news lately, would it?

/me has a cousin working there, making good money too, but the rest of the family think he's barking mad. No amount of money is worth getting killed for.

The rig I will be on is in the Gulf of Mexico. No major worries there, so I'll be safe.

LOL. Yeah hurricanes are dangerous, but they will get us out in plenty of time if it looks like one is headed too close. Growing up in south Louisiana, you get used to hurricanes. Now if I were to move to California, I don't think I could get used to earthquakes. At least with a hurricane you get a decent warning and time to prepare.

What does a clerk do? Do they need more? Jonathan and I would be thrilled to have jobs like that.

IIRC, you had/have a family. What will they do while you're away?

Well Rhonnie, mostly I will be filling out forms in Word and Excel. I will also be taking care of some billing and helicopter manifests. I will have to sometimes go out in a hardhat and steel toe boots and do an inventory check. After I am fully trained, people who come on board the platform will have to report to me and I will show them where they are working and bring them to meet the saftey supervisor.

Mind you this is contract work, so I don't get any benefits, but I will have insurance through my wife's work, and I will be looking at setting up a 401k with my investment agent.

I don't know how many people they need. I do know they have a shortage. Later on when I get into the job, I can find out more.

Yes I will be away from my family alot, but my wife is ready to make the adjustment, and so is my 11 year old. I am going to miss them when I am working as I am sure they will miss me, but I do plan on getting a nice laptop and a couple of netcams so I can still see them sometimes. When I come in, we will spend as much time as we can together.

Ah, I have several cousins who've worked on the North Sea oil rigs, they quite like it, and the weather in the Gulf of Mexico should be a little more pleasant. Oh, and I hear they're a heavy-gambling bunch, so if you actually want to keep some of that money, stay away from the 'casino'. The trick is to find something productive to do with your off time, the Masters degree sounds ideal.

Yes from what my brother tells me there are quite a few characters out there. I am sure my studies will keep me busy. After I am finished with them, I am thinking about seeing what would be involved in teaching online. I figure if I could take a class online offshore, I should be able to teach them too.

Twelve grand a month? Heck, for that kind of money, I wouldn't mind working for the devil himself.

Congrats [thumbsup] Looking for a job in oil (not actually in oil itself, which would be unpleasant, but in the industry) myself, which company is it you're with?

Congratulations.

After watching the "Modern Marvels" episode on off-shore rigs, in-between all the Katrina stuff, it looks like you'll be safer out there, too!

Well I thought I'd just give everyone an update. Things sure move slow in the oil industry. Anyhow I got a call from the guy that I interviewed with and he said that the HR person that makes the hiring decisions mentioned that I would be receiving a call from her soon and that there was going to be a class that would teach me what I would need to know for my job. As you can see from my first post I have been waiting a month for this news so I am excited as I can be that things have moved along. I just hope that "soon" does not mean another month.

Oh and btw this is post number 1000! (I knew I was saving it for something special.) [Big Grin]

Not just in the oil industry.

I was out of work for a while recently, and I received a rejection email the other day for a job I applied for in May. HR departments are notoriously slow and inept, they're typically staffed by people whos prime qualification for the job is being pretty, young, and blonde.

Hmm, maybe my company does need an HR department after all.
